Something I'll mention again too... Metamucil and Citricel never helped me actually. It is only the real, natural psyllium I've had success with...

Hi everyone! How are your holidays going?

I haven't written in a long time! Anyway, I reccently went to the famous Dr. Green in New York City for help with everything because I was having way too many problems to cope on my own and I was sick of the doctors that I've had not helping.

Anyway, he gave me zelnorm to help keep me regular. I've been taking it in moderate for the past few days now, but I'm very skeptical on medicine like this. Especially since this drug, specifically, is so new. Anyway, I'm sure some or most of you have come to this crossroad, so I have some questions:

1. Have you had any side effects on Zelnorm?

2. Do you know if you depend on this drug to go the bathroom, does it make it worse when you go off of the pill?

3. Is it like every other laxitive that eventually, you need to "up" the dose?

4. If you haven't taken it, and had the option to, why didn't you?

5. If you do take it, do you think it helps? Are there any bad aspects of it that you have noticed?

6. Anything else you might want to add about this drug?

Thanks guys! Even though I'm going to the suposed expert of Celiac Disease, I know I can always depend on this forum to give me honest, helpful and "real" answers, more than any doctor.

I would be concerned about taking presription drugs. Western medicine is only concerned about covering up symptoms, not curing anything. These drugs usually have detrimental effects on other organ symstems. You may have other things going on such as candida overgrowth , parasites ect. I can tell you what is BAD to eat. :D I have been in the emergency room for impaction. Great fun. So, if you are gluten free, you probably have no prob with this, but processed foods are killer. I used to eat frozen dinners all the time. That was when things were bad. Cheese was already mentioned - I think other dairy can be a culprit sometimes too. Carbs that aren't whole grain are really the bad guys. Pain meds are bad. I think Jen already listed everything imaginable that can help. :P

Not to be grose, but I feel that I am the queen of constipation. :P I take Zelnorm 6 mg per day, colace (2 in pm at bedtime), and eat about 12 prunes each day, not to mention salads, fresh fruits and veggies and adding flax seed to everything I eat. Still, I only "produce" about once every 10 days. Because I have had IBS in the past -- but it was the don't go 3 days, then diarrhea for 3 days type -- then I told the GI doc who did my bloodtesting and biopsy about the change (it was at 6 months when I told him) (BTW: I'm celiac negative, but have gluten ataxia) -- he gave me the Zelnorm. I thought I had not noticed a difference and was complaining about that fact to my husband. Then, I ran out of my prescription and didn't refill it. I found that it did make a small difference (2-3 days less). The neuro doc is afraid it is because of decreased peristalsis in the intestines due to the neurological damage -- still have to find out about that. Have tried Metamucil, Citrucel and psyllium -- mostly made me bloated with gas! -- but still haven't found a good "remedy". Still going to stick with the Zelnorm, though -- something is better than nothing.

i am sorry to hear about all that... i've posted most of my ideas :) i will say i have a new psyllium that i really like--no D or gas etc....and the ones i had before did that...it seems to be 'gentle.' so you are 100% gluten-free? have you looked at other foods like dairy as a culprit? so you are going to follow-up on neuro damage?

Hi Jen! Haven't looked at milk as the culprit. Haven't had a milk allergy before, maybe need to explore it with food challenges, then testing. Thanks for the idea. I am a "dairy gal." As far as the neuro aspects, it's being explored ad nauseum, quite frankly. I'm really getting tired of all the tests, but still really need ideas -- what's a girl to do, huh? :)

Cking out dairy is worth a try...it def gives me C...and there are many others who get the same effects here.

      Oh wow! Thanks for this information! I’m going to try the Benfotiamine again and will also add a B-complex to my supplements. Presently, I just take sublingual B12 (methylcobalomin). Is supplementation for celiacs always necessary even though you remain gluten-free and you’re healing as shown on endoscopy? I also take D3, mag glycinate, and try to get calcium through diet. I am trying to bump up my energy level because I don’t sleep very well and feel fatigued quite often. I’m now hopeful that adding the Benfotiamine and B-complex will help. I really appreciate your explanation and advice! Thanks again Knitty Kitty!

      @Hmart, The reason why your intestinal damage was so severe, yet your tTg IgA was so minimal can be due to cutting back on gluten (and food in general) due to worsening symptoms.  The tTg IgA antibodies are made in the intestines.  While three grams of gluten per day for several weeks are enough to cause gastrointestinal symptoms, ten grams of gluten per day for for several weeks are required to provoke sufficient antibody production so that the antibodies move out of the intestines and into the blood stream where they can be measured in blood tests.  Since you reduced your gluten consumption before testing, the antibody production went down and did not leave the intestines, hence lower than expected tTg IgA.   Still having abdominal pain and other symptoms this far out is indicative of nutritional deficiencies.  With such a severely damaged small intestine, you are not absorbing sufficient nutrients, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1, so your body us burning stored fat and even breaking down muscle to fuel your body.   Yes, it is a very good idea to supplement with vitamins and minerals during healing.  The eight essential B vitamins are water soluble and easily lost with diarrhea.  The B vitamins all work together interconnectedly, and should be supplemented together.  Taking vitamin supplements provides your body with greater opportunity to absorb them.  Thiamine and the other B vitamins cannot be stored for long, so they must be replenished every day.  Thiamine tends to become depleted first which leads to Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a condition that doctors frequently fail to recognize.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi are abdominal pain and nausea, but neuropathy can also occur, as well as body and joint pain, headaches and more.  Heart rhythm disruptions including tachycardia are classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency.  Heart attack patients are routinely administered thiamine now.   Blood tests for vitamins are notoriously inaccurate.  You can have "normal" blood levels, while tissues and organs are depleted.  Such is the case with Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency in the digestive tract.  Eating a diet high in carbohydrates, like rice, starches, and sugar, can further deplete thiamine.  The more carbohydrates one eats, the more thiamine is required per calorie to turn carbs into energy.  Burning stored fats require less thiamine, so in times of thiamine shortage, the body burns fat and muscles instead.  Muscle wasting is a classic symptoms of thiamine deficiency.  A high carbohydrate diet may also promote SIBO and/or Candida infection which can also add to symptoms.  Thiamine is required to keep SIBO and Candida in check.   Thiamine works with Pyridoxine B 6, so if Thiamine is low and can't interact with Pyridoxine, the unused B 6 accumulates and shows up as high.   Look into the Autoimmune Protocol diet.  Dr. Sarah Ballantyne is a Celiac herself.  Her book "The Paleo Approach" has been most helpful to me.  Following the AIP diet made a huge improvement in my symptoms.  Between the AIP diet and correcting nutritional deficiencies, I felt much better after a long struggle with not feeling well.   Do talk to your doctor about Gastrointestinal Beriberi.  Share the article linked below.       Other diseases, medical conditions, medications and even (for some people) some non-gluten foods can cause villous atrophy. There is also something called refractory celiac disease but it is pretty uncommon.

      knitty kitty asks a very relevant question. So many people make the mistake of experimenting with the gluten free diet or even a reduced gluten diet soon before getting formally tested.
