Refractory Sprue

I was diagnosed last November with sprue. Initially I started to get better but this past week has been horrible with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. I am starting to panic that this means I have refractory sprue versus inflammation of my small intestine

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

hello 'sillyyak',

If you don't mind I have never heard of "refractory sprue", what the heck is it?

It is when your body does not respond to the gluten free diet and fails to heal.

Had you been feeling stedily better since Nov? If this came out of the blue, and if you're sure that you weren't glutened by something, it could be a stomach virus. Either way, 2 months is not a long time in terms of seeing great results. At that point in my recovery, which is not over yet at 7 months, I was still having those types of symptoms--except the vomiting. I feel that it's too soon to be worried about Refractory Sprue. Be real careful gluten wise, and give it a bit more time. I hope you feel better soon :)

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
