Folate deficient anemia

Hi All,

I have been diagnosed with folate deficient anemia and subsequently abnormal liver function.

I had the tests done prior to moving country and this included coeliac testing (unsure what was tested for) this came back as negative. However testing has shown that I had folate deficient anemia and abnormal liver function. My symptoms include having dirrehea most days for approximately 6 years. I have also had the weird spots popping up on my body for the past 3 or so years (this could be DH but as I have also had severe eczema for the last 8/10 years is hard to clearly see these spots and the doctors have always said eczema). I cannot rule out that these spots have been caused by my liver function being abnormal.

One of the issues is that I haven’t spoke to my doctor since testing was carried out as I have moved country. I have only spoke with the nurse so I don’t have any of the results other than what I have stated above.

These tests were been carried out approximately 1 month ago and since that I have went on a strict gluten free diet and the dirrehea has improved greatly.

Therefore I still believe gluten is the issue. I will be visiting the doctor again in mid December have further testing to see if my folate and liver function has improved.

Does this sound like it may be coeliac to anyone? Has anyone had similar issues?

Thanks in advance!

Were you eating gluten in the weeks leading up to the test? Also there are different Celiac blood tests. Getting the full celiac blood panel test done is best. There is a search feature on this website where you can look up more information on that or you can ask about that on this site. Also it is best to get a biopsy to make sure.

Some people have Celiac disease and still test negative with the blood tests.

I don't know if you are Celiac, have Non-Celiac gluten sensitivity or something else. I would make sure that the doctor preformed the test correctly. It is common for doctors to not preform the test incorrectly or to give the wrong test.

If you continue to have symptoms you can also try an elimination diet like the AIP or Dr. Frasnos diet. He is a expert in Celiac Disease. Some people find these diets very helpful. The AIP diet has been shown to be effective for IBS.

Celiac disease can effect liver function or you might have another type of liver problem that is unrelated to Celiac disease. I am not a doctor so none of is medical advice. Unless you are getting tested though I would avoid eating all gluten. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity for some people at least is auto-immune related.

If you decide to go gluten free here is some information about cross contamination.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
