Metronidazole

Hi Rachel. My husband took the Metronidazole also and he was sick the entire time he took it. He actually took it two different times (for bacterial overgrowth - which he didn't have), the first time he couldn't finish it and the second time he finished it but was sooooo sick. I also called the manufacturer before he took it and verified that it was gluten free. Hopefully your body will adjust to it but he was sick the entire 14 days. If it works for you it will all be worth it. Hope your feeling better soon.

Jennifer

My doctor gave me a new probiotic when I had my appt. yesterday. I forget the brand but it had 12 billion per capsule.

I made it to work today but I'm moving like a slug. My boss says dont worry about it but I dont like feeling useless at work. Oh well...like you said its gonna be worth it in the end! :)

Thanks Jennifer,

Why did they make your husband take it if he didnt have a bacteria overgrowth? :

Hi Rachel, the doctor he was seeing at the time felt it was easier to treat him for bacterial overgrowth than to test him for it. He said if he felt better than he had it and the medicine worked and if he didn't feel better than it wasn't a contributing factor. Several months later he was seen by a doctor at a University Hospital and they actually did the test for bacterial overgrowth and it was negative. If you get a chance when your feeling better can you post the type of probiotics your doctor gave you and the brand. I tried to find the kind you mentioned in your post about the C. Diff. but no luck around here. Hang in there it will be over soon - Shane (my husband) said that 2 weeks seemed like an eternity in hell. After I looked at the bottles he actually took the Metronidazole 4 times a day and Levaquin 3 times a day for the 14 days and the the mg totaled like 1750 mg a day no wonder he was sick.

Jenn,

A doctor should never give out antibiotics based on assumptions. This is why alot of people end up with unnecessary problems. Doctors overuse antibiotics and dont warn patients of the risk nor do they tell patients about probiotics and how to restore the natural flora of the gut following antibiotic use. A perfectly healthy person with no health problems could suffer from taking antibiotics but most often those who would end up with problems are those who have undiagnosed conditions and unhealthy intestines prior to taking the antibiotics. I had to learn all this the hard way. The doctor was stupid to perscribe a drug like Metronidazole w/out doing testing. That antibiotic is strong enough to wipe out a good portion of the bacteria and if he wasnt advised to take probiotics he would have been jeopardizing his health for nothing.

I'm not sure if the probiotic my doctor gave me is available in stores. I've never seen it. The brand is Pharmax. Its HLC high potency capsules. I'm not sure what HLC is but its got that in it + 4 probiotic strains.

If anyone knows what HLC is let me know k. :)

I had a very bad reaction to Flagyl. I called my doc but they said to stick with it and it was a "difficult" med. Well that wasn't great advice. It built up over several days until I spent all night in ER, shaking, high heart rate, lot of D, dizzy and fainting feelings, sweating, maybe there is a connection here. I thought I was going to die and the doctors didn't know why.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
