Teething Biscuits

I am a diagnosed celiac as is my mother. I am afraid my 7 mos old son is also.... we have had trouble with baby foods that have muselix or oats in them. The rice cereal seems to be no problem but now we have entered the teething stage.... any ideas for teething biscuits to buy or bake?

our doc has told us that they won't test him until he is a year old. so we are waiting.

Well, the gluten-free bread that I treid to make my 3-year-old probablly turned out more like a teething biscuit than a fluffy loaf of bread that the recipe boasted :P

I'm sorry I do not have any serious recommendations for you. My son was diagnosed at 2 1/2 so we were beyond that stage. However I have a 3 month old daughter that I'm not so sure what I'm going to do once she gets into solid foods.

Good luck!

After I posted I read another thread titled "Gluten-free Crackers" - someone suggest Biscotti as an alternative to crackers - this would work perfect for a teething biscuit. I don't know of any gluten-free biscotti, but I'm sure it's out there.

We are kinda....pretty much...past that stage but a friend gave me info about a teether

You can order online too! BUT look at the ingredients as some of the items on there have gluten/wheat/oats/barley. I can't remember off the top of my head. So check it out and see if there might be something that might work.

I think that the Biscotti might work too. And just crackers. I posted about the "ritz" style crackers in that thread. They would be good for a 7 month old too.

That's the site for gluten-free biscotti someone else posted (sorry I don't remember who)

My sister has used biscotti like a holland rusk (not celiac, she just had a teething toddler at a coffeeshop :P )

But the baby liked it!

vans gluten free waffles (give them to the kid frozen and let them gum it )

also there are gluten free animal crackers (I can't remember the brand) but they get all gooey too since they are arrowroot, they work well for gumming. ;)

Just curious my 6 month old is having a hard time tolerating foods. She is off all foods at the moment waiting for her intestines to heal. I am the one with celiac disease in our family. We went to a GI doctor and he said no wheat for at least a year. Are your doctors telling you the same thing? It is kind of neat to see someone here with a baby around the same age as mine. Trying to feed it and not knowing if they have celiac disease or not. Keep in touch!

we actually have not had any trouble with foods... as long as there is no gluten, wheat, etc. I have gone to only organic baby food - but I have found that you have to be careful because even with the organics, they often don't put the full description on the front of the jar - so reading labels is a must!

I have also been making my own which is not as bad as it sounds since I am celiac also...

when I do dinner - I cook extra veggies and then pull some out before adding seasoning and mash for dinner that night and lunch the next day. the fruits I have been mashing myself or I found at Target these passifier like things that have a mesh bag on the end and you can put fruit in it and the baby can chew on it and get the juice out. they are wonderful... when I find the name of them I will forward that as well.

but the doc told me to try only rice cereal - the 2 times that we did he was soooooo fussy that I could not stand it. and He seemed to be constipated terribly which is how I started out. so we have waited 2 months and tried it again. this last time last week did not seem to bother him too much but we are still waiting.

you are right though, not knowing if they are celiac or not is the awful part - and hoping that they are not!!!!

keep in touch also!

oh wow that sounds like Maddie. She couldn't tolerate the rice cereal at all. We waited a month and tried again and she still didn't do well on it so the doctor said she didn't need rice cereal. Her GI said she could try oats next time. He wants to wait a little bit before starting food again though. She isn't tolerating formula very well right now at all. I breast feed her but I wanted to wean her before she turned 1. That may not be a choice now we will just have to wait and see.

Do you formula feed?

llmom Newbie

[we did formula feed - I did breast feed but he is a typical boy and was eating more than I was producing so I had to wean him around 5 weeks. We have been using Similac Soy formula and he has done great on that - no problems. And I tried the rice cereal again monday and again, he seemed more fussy than he usually is. He is such a happy baby that it is easy to tell when something is just not right!

It is frustrating because you feel like you are "supposed" to do certain things and then you can't because it makes your baby sick. And like you, the doc told us that if he can't tolerate the cereal not to worry about it right now because he is still getting formula that has the iron in it.

We actually haven't gone to a GI doc yet, his pediatrician seems pretty familiar with celiac so for now we are just doing the ole' try it and see!!!!!

Please keep in touch, it is great to have someone with a child around the same age and going thru the same thing!!!!!!!!!

@Charlie1946, There are many vitamin deficiencies associated with PCOS and Celiac disease and mental health issues.  The malabsorption of nutrients caused by Celiac can exacerbate PCOS and mental health issues. Vitamin B 3 Niacin (the kind that causes flushing) improves sebaceous hyperplasia and PCOS. (300 mg/day) Vitamin B 1 Thiamine improves dysphagia, and with Omega Threes, Sjogren's, and PCOS.     (300 mg/day) The other B vitamins are needed as well because they all work together like an orchestra.   The fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, are needed as well.  Low Vitamin D is common in both PCOS and Celiac and depression.   Deficiencies in Niacin Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, Folate B 9, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D can cause mental health issues.   I wish doctors would check for nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues before prescribing antidepressants.  My mental health issues didn't get better until my vitamin deficiencies were corrected and a gluten free keto/paleo diet adopted.   Though blood tests are not really accurate, you may want to get tested for deficiencies before supplementing, otherwise you'll be measuring the vitamins you've taken and blood tests will show blood levels that are too high. Yes, Thiamine TTFD and the other vitamins are available over-the-counter.  A B Complex with additional Thiamine TTFD and Niacin made a big difference to my health.  I follow a paleo diet, and make sure I get Omega Threes.  I took high dose Vitamin D to correct my deficiency there.   I've run through the mental health gamut if you would like to talk about your issues.  You can personal message us if you would be more comfortable.   Interesting Reading: Nutritional and herbal interventions for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): a comprehensive review of dietary approaches, macronutrient impact, and herbal medicine in management https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12049039/

Hi @Charlie1946 I am so sorry to hear you are suffering with this problem.   Just a few other thoughts.  I had debilitating anxiety prior to my diagnosis.  I was never admitted to a hospital but thankfully had a lot of support from friends and family, and found a couple of publications contained really helpful advice:  for depression, The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi, and for debilitating anxiety, At Last A Life by Paul David.  Both can be ordered online, there is also a website for the latter.  If you are deficient in or have low iron or B12 this can cause or worsen mental health issues.  I am sure my own issues were caused by long-term deficiencies.   If you can get your blood tested, it would be useful.  In the case of iron, make sure you only supplement if you have a deficiency, and levels can be monitored, as too much iron can be dangerous. If you have burning mouth issues, very bad TMJ or neuralgia,  I understand the pain can be managed by the use of a certain class of medication like amitriptyline, which is also used to treat depression.  But there again, it is possible with the correct diet and supplementation these issues might improve? I do hope that you find relief soon. Cristiana

@Charlie1946, as an alternative to milk-based protein shakes, let me suggest whey protein. Whey and casein are the two main proteins found in milk but whey doesn't cause issues like casein can for celiacs. Concerning your question about celiac safe mental health facilities, unfortunately, healthcare facilities in general do not have good reputations for being celiac safe. Most celiacs find that they need to depend on family members to advocate for them diligently or bring in food from the outside. Training of staff is inconsistent and there is the issue of turnover and also cross contamination.
    • Charlie1946
@knitty kitty are you kidding?  I had no idea about the casein!! No one ever mentioned that to me at all!! I basically live off that milk! I have also wondered if I have Sjorgen's , but I haven't been to the doctor yet. Can you get the TTFD over the counter? I do have dysphasia and I have lysine I just haven't been good about taking it. I am so glad I found this group and all of you with all this helpful information!! I thought I was going crazy!!  I have sebaceous hyperplasia too- is that related to Celiac?  OH , and I wanted to ask if there is a site where I could find information on mental health issues , with celiac safe facilities??

@trents, Hi, thank you for the reply, I used to be pretty good at taking my vitamins and supplements, because I also have PCOS, I have Barrett's esophagus, it's just too expensive to have it stretched all the time, and I also get kinda panicked when trying to swallow pills because of getting choked a lot before.  I think maybe the thrush made it worse, I just can't figure out why I can't get it to go away
