Thyroid Issues And Gluten Intolerance

Short history.....end of Oct 2005 I had blood taken and it was normal for my thyroid. I do have a small nodule that my dr watches, but isn't growing and isn't doing much of anything. (I did have some kind of thyroid issues as a child and was on medication for a while...don't know if I had hypo or hyper though). Fast forward to this week...I called my Gyn b/c my periods have been weird lately (tubes are tied). My cycles are normally 28 days. The month before last it was only 21 days, this month I ended on the 15th and was spotting again on the 23rd. I have been on a gluten-free diet since Jan. 12th. Gyn is running thyroid, prolactin and some other hormone test (FSH maybe). Also wants me to have an endometrial biopsy and pelvic US done. Anyone else have any similar issues or experiences? I have been extremely tired since starting the gluten-free diet and require a nap everyday now, where I rarely did before. I blamed it on my Lexapro and the possibility that I am absorbing more of it now, but I don't know. I was fine on it before and it never made me feel like this. So now when the kids nap, so do I! LOL! I feel like a big baby ;)

I hope I can find some answers b/c the kids aren't going to nap forever! LOL!!

Kim

I have had similar tiredness problems and I had potassium problems (too low) so I've been trying to eat more potassiu-rich foods. Have her check your potassium levels too if she hasn't already. Take care-prayers are with you :) Robbin

Thank you Robbin! I will ask her to check that as well. :) I hope you start to feel better soon too!

Hi Kim,

I have a lot of the same issues. I am on Seasonale for my period. I am also on Lexapro. I would like to go off of it though. I am ALWAYS tired. I just had my thyroid tested and got the results yesterday. Apparently all is well. I feel like there is something stuck in my throat where your thyroid is though. I plan to talk to my doctor Monday to see what else it could be. I too nap during the day. Sometimes twice!! Speaking of, I should go nap now before I have to go to work for the night!!

Good luck with everything!!

Hi Angi!!

Thanks for responding! Sorry you are having the same issue. I sometimes feel like there is something stuck in my throat too! I know that I do have a small nodule on my thyroid (it has been there even when my tests are normal)...I wonder if that is what it is?

Let us know what your dr days!

Thank you so much, Paula! :)

Oh and the turtleneck thing too!!! OMG! I also can't wear them b/c they drive me nuts...they make the lump feeling even worse!

Thanks for posting! I hope to find out more from my dr this week.

Thanks Kitty for your guidance. I will do the test to see if I have nutrients deficiencies and at the same time re organize my diet to see if that helps with my vertigo and other symptoms.

Yes, Vitamin D is frequently low in Celiac Disease and Meniere's both.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace test to check for thiamine insufficiency.  Diuretics can cause excess thiamine loss.  Benfotiamine is a form of thiamine that improves intestinal health.  Thiamine in the form TTFD (Tetrahydrofurfuryl Disulfide) helped improve my Meniere's syndrome.

Kitty, to correct the anemia I got IV iron and B complex for 30 days. Then my next step will be test for nutritional deficiencies.

Welcome to the forum, @nataliallano, There's a dozen or so vitamins and about as many minerals that our bodies need to live and thrive.  Our vitamins and minerals can become depleted in Celiac Disease due to malabsorption and inflammation, so we need to eat a nutritionally dense diet, and keep inflammation to a minimum.

No, not if you've got an official diagnosis already.   Let's continue our conversation on this thread... Thanks
