gluten-free Diet Weight Loss/ Monster Hunger

Hi All,

I am newly gluten free and still ascertaining other foods that seem to send my body into the bloating cramping nightmare. Most recently, I've discovered rice as a culprit. Although corm seems to be ok. I was wondering if others of you have had these reactions as you became gluten free:

1. Small reactions to troublesome foods prepared one particular way yet having severe reactions to the same food but prepared differently (no flour involved: difference in heating process ie., boiled vs broiled )

2. Weightloss accompained by ravenous hunger, although I am eating more than I ever have... I seem to be able to eat all the cashews and mixed nuts (minus peanuts) in the world.. and luckily I don't have a problem with milk products... so I've been eating gluten-free ice cream.. and I can't seem to gain a pound.. is this for real?? I have always been a healthnut but my body craves these fats and they seem the only foods that satisfy the intense hunger.

3. Also wondering at what point in recovery.. (or if I need to consider eliminating some other food from my diet) the night time bloating will abait ?

Thank you for your iinsight!

I have been reading people's posts for about a year now and the conclusion I have come to is that the people who eat a lot of the processed gluten-free cookies, cakes, brownies, ice cream.... tend to have a longer recovery time. If you eat healthy fesh foods, I can only see it helping one recover faster. I just have to advocate the SCD diet. If you want to get healthy, go on this diet!!!! www.breakingtheviciouscycle.com

I think you're so right! The gluten free goodies don't have gluten, but they are high high high in sugar and a whole bunch of icky sounding ingredients. They are definitely NOT health foods. A lot of them have sugar as the first, main ingredient. I was testing a bunch of these things in the beginning, but had to back off for now because the upset wasn't going away. Perhaps in the future I can eat them in a very moderate way, not every day, but not now. If you eliminate this stuff and just eat similar to what the SCD diet recommends, you will be amazed at how much better you will feel. I think as the gut heals, it needs just simple, uncomplicated, easily digestible foods....ONE ingredient foods, not huge mixes of things such as you find in the cookies, cakes etc. :)

Thank you both-- in fact - over the last few days I have switched to a SCDiet...

the intense hunger has subsided and I've found I can't eat any rice flour products without having a reaction.

So Scd it is... things do seem to be getting better... at least I'm not doubled over 20 minutes after eating.. but there seems to still be an on and off switch still working in my intestines... but certainly much better than before! I just couldn't believe the intense hunger pains and hypoglycemic reactions that hit me... perhaps it was the body adjusting to no gluten..

Thanks

I think you might have been craving the proteins and not necessarily the fat in nuts and milk products. Gluten containing grains have much more protein than the not gluten containing grains, so when you cut those out, you are in fact getting less protein than before. I find myself eating more meat and fish nowadays than before going gluten free. And the SCD is a good idea. It gives your intestines a chance to heal, and that's what they need right now. :)

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
