Could I Have Celiac's?!

Hi, my name is Mindy, I am 16-years old & I reside in Long Island, NY. For the past few months, it seems as if I've been having stomach things. As of late, regardless of what I eat, it doesn't stay in me for very long. :blink: My stomach makes noise & I am constantly in pain. Usually, it occurs about 30 minutes or so after I eat. I've been incredibly tired lately & very headachy, and I just don't feel well, constantly. I also very really bloated after I eat.

For awhile, I've had these little bumps on my elbows & and the back of my arms, but now it seems as if they're getting higher up & they're itchy. A few months ago I was diagnosed with psoriosis, so I guess that could be it, but I don't know. Is there a chance I could have Celiac's? I do eat a LOT of bread products throughout the day (cereal or a granola bar for breakfast, a sandwhich for lunch, etc.)

If anybody could provide me with any information, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Those are all symptoms of celiac and the skin thing could possibly be DH (and if you have DH you do or will have celiac), but of course we can't diagnose you. You can go back to a dermatologist and ask him if your skin problem could possibly be DH. You can also go to your doctor, describe your symptoms, and ask for the blood tests for celiac.

Not sure what the "pinned" means but it shows up on all posts.

Hi Mindy, I agree with Richard it does sound like Celiac or Dermatitis Herpetiformis. I strongly suggest you see your doctor about this, preferable a Dermy or a Gastro and ask them if they will test you.

It's a simple blood test but not fool proof. A lot of people here have a hard time getting a dx through the docs because it take *time* for a disease to show up in the blood?!??! It gets very frustrating and time consuming just don't give up! Knowledge is power and it is your health so take control and search until you have answers you are satisfied with!!!

Mindy,

Some people might disagree, but I wouldn't reduce the amount of bread products you eat until you are able to see a doctor and get tested for Celiac.

I stopped eating gluten before getting tested and it makes it much more difficult to find out what is wrong with you.

You might want to keep a food diary and see if you notice certain things making you sicker. That could help answer questions at the doctor's office.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
