Am I cealic or is it just complications with liver disease

Good day good people I'm 25 years old, South African no family history with cealic disease. I have quitted eating gluten foods all together because I've had some bloating, gastrointestinal problems, weight loss and yellow poo. But then also now I've noticed that I've had liver or gallbladder pains which I've ignored for years because I've been smoking pot daily and forgot about the pain. I read that it is said the liver and gallbladder can cause same gastrointestinal problems like cealic due to bile problems. Like weight lost. I lose more weight if I'm physically working hard or gym. But I gain if I don't gym. And yes I'm gluten free now but if I become physically active lose weight and I have anemia, liver pain or gallbladder pain after eating fatty foods. I really want to eat gluten foods again I feel like I have been lying to my self. No one in my family has had cealic all of them. I'm black south african and never heard one has it. I'm so confused. I want to go to the doctor though but I need you guys to clear me up first. Thanks

Hi,

Well, you won't be able to get an accurate celiac disease test since you haven't been eating gluten.  If you eat some daily gluten (doesn't have to be much) for 12 weeks you can get the blood antibodies tests.  If you eat gluten for 2 weeks you can get the endoscopy test.  But first I think you should search for a good celiac aware doctor to talk to.

There are other gastroinstetinal conditions that can cause GI symptoms besides celiac.  You mentioned possible liver issues or gall bladder issues.  Those are 2.  There are also Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, SIBO, ulcers and probably more.

But if your symptoms improved by going on a gluten-free diet that indicates a problem with gluten.  The gluten that affects people with celiac is in wheat, rye and barley.  Some of us react to oat gluten also.

I've also noticed that the symptoms did resolve after I've stopped eating gluten though also I quitted eating suger. Last week I tried suger my liver felt pain and I got the bloating again. Today morning I ate a pie baked in wheat flour but I did not get symptoms.

Many people who have celiac disease, do not have gastrointestinal symptoms.  The only way to know if you have celiac disease is to get tested.  It sounds like you really should see a doctor if you suspect gallbladder or liver problems.  We can not diagnose you on the internet.

Take care.

Please do not think that you can not develop celiac disease because you are black, South African or that no one in your family has had celiac disease.  Since you had the pie, consider going back on a normal gluten diet for 6 to 12 weeks and then ask for celiac disease testing.   If you want to improve your health while you are consuming gluten, avoid junk food like sodas (Coke/Pepsi) and sugar in general.  But still try to get to a doctor.  Even normal lab tests (pretty cheap) can tell you if your liver is okay.

This study was done on type 1 diabetics.  But the thing to notice is that many patients had no symptoms and they were black and they still had celiac disease!

There is a 10 year old post in this forum on Edy's and Dreyer's ice cream. The information is somewhat outdated and the thread is closed to further comment, so here is a new one. Edy's And Dreyer's Grand Vanilla Bean Ice Cream - 1.5 Quart is labeled "Gluten Free". This is a different answer than years gone by. I don't know the answer for any other flavor at this moment. On 1 May, 2026, Edy's website says: "As a general rule, the gluten in Edy's and Dreyer's® frozen dessert products is present only in the added bakery products, such as cookies, cake or brownies. We always label the eight major food allergens on our package by their common name. We recommend to always check the label for the most current information before purchasing and/or consuming a product. The exception to this rule is our Slow Churned French Silk frozen dairy dessert, which contains gluten in the natural flavors." https://www.icecream.com/us/en/brands/edys-and-dreyers/faq It seems that Edy's and Dreyer's are more celiac-friendly than they were 10 years ago. Once I found enough information to make today's buying decision, I stopped researching.

probably not your situation @Mimiof2, but allow me to add one more to @trents list of celiac-mimics: "olmesartan-induced sprue-like enteropathy"

My dad had an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.  Fortunately, it was discovered during an exam.  The doctor could feel my dad's heart beating in his stomach/abdomen.  The aneurysm burst when the doctor first touched it in surgery.  Since he was already hooked up to the bypass machine, my dad survived ten more years.  Close call! Triple A's can press on the nerves in the spinal cord causing leg pain.  I'm wondering if bowing the head might have increased the pressure on an aneurysm and then the nerves.   https://gulfcoastsurgeons.com/understanding-abdominal-aortic-aneurysm-symptoms-and-causes/ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Presenting as a Claudication https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4040638/

You have an odd story there. To me, the mechanical trigger suggests a mechanical problem and lower leg pain is a classic sciatica symptom. The fact that the clear mechanical linkage is no longer there does not take away from the fact that it was - maybe something shifted and the simple alignment is no longer there. There's also a good chance I am wrong and it's something else entirely. @Scott Adams's mention of shingles is interesting. It seems possible but unlikely to me, but who knows. However, I am writing here to reinforce the idea of getting the shingles vaccine. Ask anyone who has ever had shingles and they will bend your ear telling you how bad it is. I watched my wife go through it and it scared the bejeebers out of me. Even if you had the chicken pox vaccine, you really want to get the shingles vaccine.

Oddly this effect has gone now, just happened yesterday evening, the nerve pain is now back to its usual "unpredictable" random self again - but that was the only time I ever had some mechanical trigger for it, don't know why! There's no (or wasn't) actual pain in my neck - it was inside the leg, but when I looked down, now though, the leg pain just comes and goes randomly as before again.
