HI, I was reading about pet food and gluten on another post here and thought, lets make a topic out of it. I have noticed that even the treats contain a lot of gluten in them as well. WE buy the Nurto Rice and Lamb for our 21 week old black lab.

I just bought some gluten free cat food for my kitties yesterday, and I already threw out the bag and can't remember the name of it... I got it at the health food store. I've tried other brands that are gluten-free before for the cats and they didn't like them, but they seem to really like this one.

When the dog runs out of her food I think I'm going to try gluten-free dog food for her too...

after reading about how even cats and dogs can be gluten intolerant, I decided that this would be healthier for them, besides I have one kitty that's been throwing up a lot and losing weight and losing his fur... so I'm hoping this will help him. The vet thinks he's just depressed (????!!!!!?????)

I've started feeding my cat raw food. He was getting too fat on anything with grains. I really can't believe cats should be eating grains at all. However, the industry doesn't give us much choice. So anyway, I found a few places that grind up the bones and all and send it to you frozen. Its more expensive, but the cat seems a lot healthier. I just wish I had started him on this years ago.

Also, ground lamb isn't too expensive. I get that when I'm out of the other stuff. There's a yahoo group called "rawcats" that can help get you started if you're interested.

My stepmom's dog has lots of food allergies. he's really lethargic and huge for his breed- they thought maybe he had a thyroid problem. He's allergic to lots of grains. Sound familiar? :D

Now the dogs eat BARF= Bones And Raw Food. Basically it's raw meat (cheaper stuff like chicken necks), ground up bones (raw, since cooked bones are dangerous for dogs), and ground up vegetable matter. You can make it yourself from recipes on the internet, but my stepmom gets it in patties from the holistic vet. Both dogs are healthier on it. The male with all the allergies is much better and less itchy. It's kinda like Paleo Diet in philosophy- what dogs should be eating. You can do a Google search on "BARF diet".

just about a week after switching my kitties to gluten free food, my one cat that was having problems is looking so much better already! He seems to have stopped throwing up, his fur looks a ton better and the patches are starting to fill in, and he even looks like he's put some weight back on! Crazy!

I got the dog food for my Honey dog today too... It's One Earth Naturals and sheesh it's pricey, but they really seem to like it a lot!

      Hi,  My 7 year daughter has complained of this in the past, which I thought were part of her glutening symptom, but more recently I have come to figure out it's part of her histamine overload symptom. This one symptom was part of her broader profile, which included irritability, extreme hunger, confusion, post-nasal drip. You might want to look up "histamine intolerance". I wish I had known of this at the time of her diagnosis, life would have been much easier.  I hope you are able to figure out.

      My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?

      Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

      I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.
