Wouldn't A Celiac React To All Glutens?

We are still in the testing mode and are not "offical" Celiac. For those that don't remember, Delaney has reacted to wheat and oats and we are getting ready to head to a GI in April. Never had rye and has been gluten-free for two months. My mother gave Delaney baby food that was barley based. Barley, beef and carrots with a rice starch. Nothing else. No reaction. No diarrhea. Nothing. So my obvious question......if she is Celiac/gluten intollerant and clearly reacts to oats and wheat.....wouldn't she also to all gluten foods?

You have to assume that barley is doing damage but it's possible that it doesn't affect outwardly the way the others do.

If she has Celiac, then I agree with Richard that barley is maybe just not giving her the nasty symptoms the other foods are. Then, there is the chance she has allergies to wheat and/or oats, but not Celiac disease. That is also within the realm of possibility. It's stuff like this that makes this disease so hard to diagnose and makes it soooo hard for so many people to figure out what exactly it is that is making them sick. BUT, if you do get a diagnosis of celiac disease, staying away from barley is a must, reaction or not. I don't have any reactions to anything, but I still have to stay away.

It's stuff like this that makes this disease so hard to diagnose and makes it soooo hard for so many people to figure out what exactly it is that is making them sick.

Oh isn't that the truth. :blink: Life would be so much easier if she would just follow the textbook somewhere along the line for something!!! I think she left that at the hospital!!!!

We can't always rely on our symptoms to indicate what is occuring inside our bodies...

Unfortunately symptoms is all I have to go by right now. :( Makes it even harder. I will be so happy when we have an answer. I just thought it odd that she would react so obviously and strongly to oats and wheat and yet not to barley. When I found out she had barley I took cover and expected the worse. I kept her off the barley in the beginning of the diet due to her SPT at the allergist. But as she started reactions to grains one by one and the dr. started talking Celiac, I just went gluten-free until further notice. And she has been doing well. I was just surprised. I would think if you have any reactions you would no matter the gluten. Then of course I start doubting everything and thinking I am crazy!

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
