Silent Celiac!!?

Hi All,

Slightly in shock after being told I have silent celiacs! I have absolutely no gut symptoms at all just brain fog that I went to a naturopath about. She ordered some gut tests and then suggested referral to a gastroenterologist and they’ve confirmed it!
Does anyone else have this? I’m so confused but happy to know what’s the cause of my brain fog. Both the naturopath and gastroenterologist said going gluten free will heal the gut so I shouldn’t worry too much.
How long does it take to heal??
I already generally eat gluten free but not super strict so I’m not too worried about doing it properly.

Silent celiac disease is actually not uncommon. If left undiagnosed and unattended long enough it will eventually begin to make "noise".

I was pretty much a silent celiac myself, though looking back after diagnosis I did have an occasional loose stool that attributed to something else.

It commonly takes about 2 years for the gut to completely heal once you get serious about eating gluten free and are consistent. But, you should start to feel better in weeks or months. You will help yourself if you start taking a high potency gluten-free B-complex, about 5000IU per day of D3. Make sure your vitamins and supplements are gluten free and any other meds as well. Costco's Nature Made line is a good choice.

Learning to eat gluten-free involves a significant learning curve and you will make mistakes for awhile. Eventually, you develop a sort of sixth sense of what might have gluten and that you should avoid.

Here is a primer:

It will be more of a challenge for you as a silent celiac to discern when you have gotten some gluten contamination, at least at first. After you have been gluten free for a significant period of time you will likely have become more sensitive to it and less tolerant.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
