Diagnosed via blood test 1 year ago randomly having symptoms again while strictly gluten free?

Hi!
I was diagnosed via bloodwork a year ago with celiac, going gluten free definitely cleared up a lot of my symptoms (nausea after gluten meals, loose floating stools, rank gas). Had random bouts of upset tummy (possibly glutened a few times). Really tightened down my diet decided to try a few probiotics to get back to my pre-celiac regularity because I never got back to perfectly normal bowels after diagnosis. After the last probiotic I quit taking my stomach has been off! Lots of rumbling, gas, and even diarrhea again. Messaged my doctor and he told me to take align probiotic. I’m one week into it and seeing minimal improvement. It couldn’t be gluten upsetting my stomach so what gives? I’ve explored the possibility of SIBO? Just not sure why I’ve never leveled off after diagnosis and completely cutting out gluten? Ugh! Any other diagnosed celiacs still having trouble after going gluten free? Could it be IBS on top of celiac? I’ve eliminated dairy before and it doesn’t seem to help? So I don’t believe I have a lactose issue?

Welcome to the forum, Meghan255!

IBS is more common in the celiac population than in the general population. So, it's a possibility.

There's also the possibility that you have developed additional food intolerances and it can be almost almost anything, though the most common are dairy and oats (even glute free oats).

Have you checked all the labels of the processed and canned goods in your pantry lately. Food companies can and do change formulations such that what used to be gluten-free is no more. What about supplements and meds? Wheat starch can be used as a filler in pills.

Are you intimate with someone who is still consuming gluten? Kissing can "gluten" the celiac if the other party has consumed gluten close to the time of the mouth to mouth contact.

@Meghan255,

Welcome to the forum!

Could you please tell us what you include in your diet?

Do you include dairy?

Do you eat Gluten free facsimile foods (cookies, bread, processed packaged foods)?

Do you eat nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, and peppers)?

Are you vegetarian?

Thanks!

This article may be helpful, and if you eat in restaurant, even from a gluten-free menu, cross contamination is still likely:

i actually have been experiencing some GI issues this past 10 days on and off and i’ve been strictly gluten-free since jan of 2021- today for example i woke up with a slight rash on my mouth area and chin that settled down until dinner time when i felt the itchy crawly skin feeling again - i used several new facial products in last 2 days which may have caused it and i think my GI issues might be from having a bit too much lactose lately / which i generally don’t have - im hoping it will clear up and i will get back to normal - i may have gotten intolerant to lactose -

I’ve got the patch, and then 100mg and says MFG XIROMED - is that generic manufacturer?  Pharmacist confirmed there’s no gluten, and im Not having celiac symptoms, just dermatitis herpetiformis symptoms, which is why I’m looking at hormone influence on inflammation/autoimmune issues writ large, and not looking at the gluten specifically.

Thank you for your message - essentially I have not been able to figure anything out on this front. From all I can find, and from people here have answered, then it is extremely unlikely that the progesterone should contain gluten. I have an endoscopy scheduled soon to see if there is damage, and to try and figure out what or where the issue stems from. I did have a stool test done, that did not contain gluten (while taking the progesterone pills).  So unfortunately I am still at a loss for answers.  Out of curiosity, which dose and manufacture of progesterone pills do you take?  I've tried both the 100mg and the 200mg progesterone pills, both from Aurobindo Pharm.

I’m curious where you’ve ended up with this journey? I’ve just started HRT for perimenopause, and have been having dermatitis herpetiformis symptoms, and even developed what seems to be a small patch of psoriasis (which I’ve not previously had)… basic googling has told me HRT can flare up some autoimmune diseases, including lupus and psoriasis, but dermatitis herpetiformis is not specifically mentioned.    so, I’m curious where you’ve ended up

Welcome to the forum, @Beagirl! What you are feeling is what we have all felt to one degree or another and we typically feel it more intensely when we already have a laundry list of health issues to work around. It's often the result of a sense of loss . . . of having to say goodbye to some good foods that we enjoy that may have been part of a shrinking list of things that are left that we still found pleasure in. And also for many it represents a social loss . . . not being able to accept dinner invitations from family and friends because you are unsure if they know how to cook gluten free . . . not being able to go out to just any restaurant with family and friends because their menu doesn't have gluten free offerings and if it it does, are they careful with regard to cross contamination issues?

Recently diagnosed with a problem with no cure is annoying and upsetting. Why does this happen? I have enough health problems to deal with and now this. I can live with reading labels and giving up things at I'm 68 years old. I can cook with gluten free everything and not give up good healthy food, look for gluten free restaurants, do all I'm told to do to manage the problem. So I don't know why I'm complaining since it is manageable.
