Since we're discussing vitamin supplements here so much because celiacs often need them, I thought this was interesting:

"Scientists discovered that high levels of NR could not only increase someone’s risk of developing triple-negative breast cancer, but also could cause the cancer to metastasize or spread to the brain."

Scott,

My nephew actually showed/shared with me this research recently.

Here is a couple links that will explaing the difference between Niaicinamide and Niacinamide Riboside aka NR.

Form matters......and Niacinamide Riboside is not commonly available because of it's high price.....IN FACT it can't be found on the Vitamin Shoppe's website to even order......they are conflating one supplement (form) with the other....and transferring the potentinally harmful altered form to the natural Vitamin healing form of Vitamin B3.....because it does indeed unaturally promote cell NAD+ levels....which the cancer cells use to grow.....Niacin and/or Niacinamide by themselves do not do that....

https://www.thorne.com/take-5-daily/article/meet-the-vitamin-b3-family-nr-nmn-niacin-explained

See their chart (I couldn't copy it over)......Niacinamide does not promote NAD+ the substance that promotes the cancer link the way the Niacinamide Riboside aka NR form does.

See also this link

https://htfd6.org/is-niacinamide-the-same-as-nicotinamide-riboside/

That explains the difference between the two forms.....quoting

"What is the difference between niacinamide and nicotinamide riboside?

The way that your body converts dietary vitamin B into NAD makes all the difference. Nicotinamide, also known as niacinamide, is an amide of nicotinic acid, which is commonly known as niacin. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), on the other hand, is a chemically altered form of nicotinamide that has unique attributes." that promotes the cancer link connection found in the latest research.....

The non NAD+ promoting form of Niacin and/or Niacinamide alone can actually help promote Cancer healing!

See this recent research that bears this out....

Entitled "Study: Niacin may help immune system battle a deadly brain tumor"

quoting from this article where Niacin actually tripled survival rates in brain tumors...

"The results published in Science Translational Medicine found the lifespan of mice with glioblastoma that received combination therapy tripled, increasing to 150 days from 40 days."

IN FACT after studying over 1,000 plus subtances they found Vitamin B3 promoted cancer survival better than any other substance screened.

Quoting again...

"We were able to help immune cells do what they're supposed to do, attack and kill cancer cells," says Dr. Susobhan Sarkar, Ph.D., first author on the study. "We screened 1,040 compounds and found niacin had the properties needed to activate immune cells, specifically myeloid cells, and inhibit the growth of brain tumor initiating stem cells."

The NAD+ stimulating affects of NR is the problem and not the natural Niacin or Niacianmide form....

IN FACT the Niacin therapy alone was able to extend life of the most dangerous brain cancers!

quoting again...

"In the study, the researchers found that niacin therapy alone extended survival and that the combination therapy with temozolomide (a chemotherapy drug commonly used against glioblastoma) markedly prolonged survival by stimulating and re-educating immune cells to stop helping the cancer and instead, destroy it."

Wrong form......wrong results.....in the right (Natural) forms you have wonderful, healthy, healing results!

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice.

I believe a patent-able form of a niacin precursor is trying to be manufactured.  It is not possible to patent a naturally occurring substance like vitamins, but it's possible to patent a synthetic form or in a delivery system form.

NR is naturally present in foods like dairy.

Niacin and thiamine work together.  While NR may stimulate cancer if left floating around, with Thiamine to further process NR to a less active state, and with thiamine's anticancer effects...  just another example of how vitamins all work together.

NR by itself is not a good marketing risk.

Scott and Knitty Kitty,

This backs up Knitty Kitty’s assertion about the attempt to patent NAD+ as a drug……taking it off the available supplement list…

It is a interesting read…..and shows how Vitamins and supplements compete with “Patentable Drugs” in the marketplace….

https://www.lifespan.io/news/fda-purges-nmn-from-the-list-of-supplements/

Entitled  "FDA Purges NMN From the List of Supplements: The rationale is that it is being investigated as a drug."

And probably why Nicotinamide Riboside (NR) is not widely available as a supplement anymore.....because it has been declared as a possible "Drug Candidate"......I always wondered why I couldn't find it anymore.....and this article explains why?

Note: both the NR and NMN forms are precursors of NAD+ and open for "Patenting" as drugs but Niaciamide or Niacin is not because they are actually different forms of Vitamin B3 itself aka Nicotinic Acid in its flushing form or Niacinamide in the naturally flush free form!.....so they invented a "patentable" drug form called Niaspan which had "Side Effects" not caused by the "Natural Form" of Niacin......and too this day the Naturual form of Niacin is confused for the Synthetic from which cause side efffects...

They have KNOWN about this affect for 10 years now.....and drug companies are still trying to go around the natural healthy form of Niacin.......and they almost always  have to deal with the side effects from not using the natural, healthy forms of Vitamin B3.

Entitled "New study cautions use of drugs to block 'niacin flush'"

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2012-04-cautions-drugs-block-niacin-flush.html

Interestingly Vitamins can’t be patented as Knitty Kitty noted but their precursors can etc…. NMN and NR are precursor for NAD+ etc….

Lucky natural NAD+ precursor are available in foods and no supplements are needed to boost NAD+ levels….

Quoting from the article…

“NAD+ levels can be boosted via its precursors, which include nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN). NMN-containing supplements have been gaining popularity in the longevity community, even though not everyone agrees on their effectiveness or safety. NMN naturally occurs in foods such as edamame, broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, and avocado.”

I still remember this same kind of  "Brough Ha Ha" over Red Rice yeast back in the day.....it too was asked to be banned as a supplement because it had a patentable natural form of Statins.....

And the drug companies didn't want the competiton!

I hope this is helpful.

Posterboy,

I always like to go to the source of information.  Here is a link to the FDA letter indicating that NMN cannot be defined as a dietary supplement in the US.

The form I've been taking is inositol hexanicotinate, so hopefully it's not prone to this issue.

Scott Et Al,

I alluded to this earlier......when drug companies started blocking the "natural action" of Niacin aka Nicotinic Acid to flush us.....it looses/limits some of the benefits people seek to get from taking Niacin in the first place.

Here is the summary of the findings...

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/niacin-doesnt-stop-heart-attacks-major-study-finds-flna1C9459707

It was called the "Thrive Study" and before it Niacin as the Patented Slow Release "Niaspan" form failed to lower heart risk......and since that time Niacin has been looked down on in the medical community.

It is because it blocks the natural healthy flushing of Niacin.....if you want the benefit of taking Niacin.....you will have to take the Nicotinic Acid form......and titrate it up....or take the Naturally flush free form of Niacinamide....

Here is a great overview artcle of why you want to "Invite the Flush" of Niacin.

https://life-enhancement.com/pages/why-the-niacin-flush-may-be-surprisingly-beneficial-to-your-health

This article explains how to tritrate up your levels of Naicin so the flushing is not too intense.....so you don't stop it before it does you any good....

http://getwellstaywellathome.com/blog/2015/06/seasonal-allergies-and-the-niacin-flush/

Once you know how healthy the flush is too you......then it is an easy thing to tolerate....and with each succeeding flush.......the flush is a little less intense each time.....until it just goes away naturally!

It happens like clockwork in higher does of Nicotonic Acid say 100mg to 200 mg etc... after 30 minutes you start the flush and after an hour (or so) depending on the original dosage amount.....the flush subsides....

IF it is not Niacinamide or the flushing kind of Niacin......you are not doing it right!

Essentially, NO Flush equals NO Benefit.....or at least the kind you are looking for by taking Niacin aka Vitamin B3 in the first place.

Note: Niacinamide because it does not flush you will not help your Cholesterol levels but the flushing Nicotinic Acid (NA) form will and that is why it helps your elevated Cholesterol levels......and is also, in part, why Non-Flushing Niacin does not help the way the naturally flushing kind will/does!

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice.

Posterboy by the grace of God,

P.S. Here is the full STRIVE Study if someone want to read it.....and note the effect of "NO Heart" Benefit was the from the Flush Free Form.....the exact same kind that you are taking now....

If black seed oil is working for his Afib, stick to it, but if not, I can say that ablation therapy is no big deal--my mother was out of the procedure in about 1 hour and went home that evening, and had zero negative effects from the treatment. PS - I would recommend that your husband get an Apple watch to monitor his Afib--there is an app and it will take readings 24/7 and give reports on how much of the time he's in it. Actual data like this should be what should guide his treatment.

This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
