What is the reason?

AmandaG Rookie

To prep for colonoscopy. Dulcolax is not gluten free, that I could find.

Do you have any reason to believe ducolax contains gluten other than it does not claim to be gluten free? There are many health and wellness products that will be gluten free but will not state so on the label.

You can search this site for many meds, especially prescription ones:

https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

For the liquid version I see no gluten ingredients:

How do you know when using the nlm site that it does or does not have gluten in the medication? Thank you again!

When I googled the recommended products they both came up as having gluten and I have not been able to find a gluten free alternative.  One site I looked at https://www.verywellhealth.com/gluten-free-diarrhea-constipation-and-heartburn-drugs-4139871

10 ounce bottles of Magnesium Citrate. Although since the pandemic it has been out of stock in all the stores in my area.

Dulcolax® Soft Chews — Mixed Berry, Black Cherry

Dulcolax® Soft Chews are cramp-free laxatives indicated for the relief of occasional constipation. Each chew contains 1200 mg of the active ingredient, magnesium hydroxide. Within 30 minutes to 6 hours, it works naturally with your body to provide fast, gentle constipation relief.

Amanda, another approach, one I have used numbers of times, is to call the manufacturer and ask that question. When I have done that I often find that the manufacturer will state that they do not there is no gluten in the ingredients per se but that they cannot rule out cross contamination in the manufacturing process since shared equipment is used. Are you a highly sensitive celiac such that traces of gluten from CC cause you to react?

Thanks for that tip! I did email them to see their recommendations. I avoid cross contamination as much as possible. I would say high, I ate a chip that was supposed to be safe, but must have been in the fryer with something else and immediately started itching.

Thank you! I have to avoid the red dye due to the scopes. I think I looked into them and they did not have any chews without the red in them. I will keep looking

You would scroll down to "Ingredients & Appearance" and open that and look at the active and inactive ingredients, for example:

https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?setid=c88f33ed-6dfb-4c5e-bc01-d8e36dd97299

The gluten-containing ingredients are almost always listed in the inactive ingredients.

Thank you Scott!

This was their response, in case anyone else might need it.

DULCOLAX products are available in the following active ingredients: bisacodyl, docusate sodium and magnesium hydroxide. Only DULCOLAX Laxative (bisacodyl) tablets have been studied for use in bowel preparation before colon procedures, such as colonoscopy. Please consult with your physician to determine instructions and to ensure the appropriate use of DULCOLAX Laxative (bisacodyl) tablets for colonoscopy.

DULCOLAX products do not contain any ingredients made from a gluten-containing grain such as wheat, barley, or rye. However, DULCOLAX products are not certified gluten-free. Sanofi's manufacturing facilities adhere to strict standards designed to prevent cross contamination between products.

It’s great that you’ve scheduled a doctor’s appointment to address your symptoms, especially given your family history of autoimmune diseases, including celiac disease. Your symptoms—such as stomach pain, chronic diarrhea, nausea after gluten consumption, joint pain, and headaches—do align with common signs of celiac disease, so it’s definitely worth discussing with your doctor. To help your doctor understand your concerns clearly, consider writing down a detailed list of your symptoms, including when they started, how often they occur, and any patterns you’ve noticed (like symptoms worsening after eating gluten). Mentioning your family history of autoimmune conditions will also be helpful, as celiac disease has a genetic component. You might also ask about getting tested for celiac disease, which typically involves blood tests and possibly an endoscopy. Avoid cutting gluten out of your diet before testing, as this can affect the accuracy of the results. Hopefully, your doctor can provide clarity and guide you toward the right next steps—hang in there, and good luck with your appointment!

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS) is not a common symptom of celiac disease, but there can be occasional overlap—particularly in children. Celiac disease typically presents with symptoms like chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and nutrient deficiencies, while CVS is marked by repeated, intense vomiting episodes separated by periods of normal health. In rare cases, undiagnosed celiac disease can cause recurrent vomiting that mimics CVS, and symptoms may resolve on a gluten-free diet. Because of this, celiac disease should be ruled out in anyone diagnosed with CVS, especially if there are other gastrointestinal or nutritional concerns. However, vomiting alone is more often related to other conditions such as migraines or autonomic dysfunction.

First, be sure to eat tons of gluten in the two weeks leading up to the endoscopy--like 4 slices of wheat bread a day. Talk to your doctor about when to go gluten-free, but normally you can do so after all tests are done.

Be aware that putting your child on a gluten free diet ahead of an official celiac diagnosis will invalidate any attempt to arrive at an official diagnosis. If at some point in time after commencing a gluten free diet you wish to have your child tested for celiac disease, he/she would need to go back to eating normal amounts of gluten for weeks/months leading up to the testing date. And it is often the case that once gluten has been withdrawn for a significant amount of time, the reactions are much stronger when going back on it.

I'm investigating the possibility of having celiac disease. My kid has Coffins Lowery syndrome, a rare form of Austism, and constantly has these CVS episodes. We suspect it could be related to Gluten sensitivity or celiac. We just started the diet last week, and we'll keep an eye on any improvements.
