Did my old endoscopy even check for celiac?!

Hi there,

I had an endoscopy several years ago, with (what was communicated to me) the express purpose to check for celiac. (Neither of my first or second GI's did blood tests- were those around in 2017?).

Cut to now, blood test results from a neurologist. Deamid/Gliadin AB IGA 101.2 (Ref value <15.0) and Deamid/Gliadin AB IGG 20 (ref value <15).

So I go straight to a new GI and I get the old endoscopy results sent to him. He says there is no indication that they specifically looked at celiac. Look, I know celiac might have developed later. But my issues literally started when I started eating gluten after not eating it for about a year (I was ahead of the curve on the whole paleo-diet thing) and yes hindsight is 2020 but I had a lot of mental health other issues I was battling so once I found out I wasn't celiac I could never commit to gluten free after that. Also, I would go to doctor after doctor and tell them celiac was ruled out.

This is from the old endoscopy: Diagnosis & Interpretation: Stomach, Biopsy ANTRAL MUCOSA WITH MILD CHRONIC GASTRITIS AND REACTIVE CHANGE. UNREMARKABLE GASTRIC BODY TYPE MUCOSA. NO INTENSTINAL METAPLASIA DYSPLASIA OR MALIGNANCY. APPROPRIATELY CONTROLLED IMMUNOSTAIN IS NEGATIVE FOR H>PYLORI. Gross Description: Stomach, Biopsy - Labeled as: "Gastric" Received in formalin are 4 fragments of pink-tan soft tissue ranging from 0.2 to 0.4 cm. The specimen is submitted entirely in a single cassette.

So what are your thoughts? Did they skip the celiac analysis? Why would they do that? What is going on!?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

Looks like they only examined and biopsied the stomach. Celiac disease affects the small bowel.

I agree, it looks like they did not take samples in the small bowel for celiac disease. This is rather strange if they told you they were looking to see if you had celiac disease.

Since your blood test results are such a high positive, you will need to decide whether to do another endoscopy, and this article may be helpful:

good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.

I believe the GFCO does use a common logo for certified gluten free products (those containing not more that 10ppm of gluten) but nothing universal yet from the FDA for standard gluten free products (those containing not more that 20ppm).
