I have seen Glutenease Mary Ruth Gluten Digestive enzyme with high ratings on Amazon but curious what this actually does to help intolerance with gluten? Has anyone tried these products? Thoughts.

I can't speak for that one, but some people here including myself use the one from our sponsor here called GliadinX, which uses AN-PEP enzymes and has many scientific publications about how if can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach. You can read those studies here:

Have you noticed a difference using it vs not using it?

Scott Adams Grand Master

Yes, before using it I ended up with gluten issues ~%25-30% of the time when eating at restaurants. Now I take two before eating in any restaurant and haven't noticed any further issues. That said, it isn't supposed to be used to purposefully eat gluten, but seems perfect for the time that your hashbrowns may have been cooked on the same grill as the pancakes, etc.

so its helpful for cross contamination possibility in restaurants.

Scott Adams Grand Master

Yes, I only use it when I'm eating outside my home, at restaurants, when traveling, when at a friends' houses for meals, etc.

very interesting that FDA hasnt looked into this study to confirm it helps.

The FDA doesn't regulate nutraceuticals like this. The AN-PEP enzyme has been used for decades in commercial beer brewing as a clarifying agent, and is no longer patentable, thus no pharmaceutical companies are interested in it specifically, although there are companies that are trying to develop their own version of it that can be patented.

@Bronwyn W Working with your medical provider, you could do a complete blood count test. If you were bleeding say from an ulcer in the stomach (and let's hope not), your red blood cells could be low and your hemoglobin low as well. Your stools may show up as the proverbial "dark and tarry," indicative of a bleeding site further away from the anus. Basically, you may be anemic. Your heart may be beating extra fast as a way to compensate for the decreased number of blood cells, your oxygen saturation may be lower than normal on a pulse oximeter, and so on. But talk to your doctor.

Thank you for this insight. I have had rectal bleeding after glutening and subsequent constipation (+ IBS-C) and always attributed it to internal hemorrhoids (diagnosed). What I wasn't aware of is the possibility of bleeding further up the digestive tract. Please can you elaborate on the causes and symptoms to watch for?

Be sure to be eating gluten daily until all of your celiac disease tests are completed (at least 2 slices worth of wheat bread per day for at least 6-8 weeks before any blood tests, and 2 weeks before an endoscopy).

@maylynn, No, I took over the counter thiamine supplements, thiamine hydrochloride, Benfotiamine, and TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide).  My doctors were not very knowledgeable about nutrition and vitamins, and they missed my symptoms being connected to vitamin deficiencies.  I studied nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology because I wanted to know what vitamins were doing inside the body.  My doctors just prescribed pharmaceuticals to cover the symptoms of poor health due to malabsorption of nutrients. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, physically active, emotionally stressed and work outside in hot weather.  Thiamine works...

@knitty kitty Did they give you medication for the Thiamine? I have never heard of that and have never related to symptoms more. My energy is always SO low. Zero drive to get anything done or work out. I used to love being on the go and being active. I am heading to the doctor next week so I will make sure to bring this up! Thank you so much!
