I can identify with most everything on this list of symptoms as well.

Do you happen to have a list of symptoms for mercury poisoning/toxicity? I would be curious to know if there are similarities.

Some Other Facts About Mercury

1. Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive element on Earth.

2. A silver colored mercury amalgam filling normally contains 52% mercury

3. On average, amalgam filling weighs 1 gram and contains 1/2 gram of mercury

4. The typical aduly carries ten amalgam fillings containing about 5 grams of mercury

5. 1/2 gram of mercury in a ten acre lake would warrant issuance of a fish advisory for the lake

6. Running shoes with mercury lights in their heels were banned by the Minnesota Legislature in 1994 because they contained a 1/2 gram of mercury in them and this was considered dangerous to public health

7. The use of mercury amalgams has been banned and are on a scheduled phaseout in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Sweden

8. A proposition passed in California in 1994 requires a warning in dental offices using mercury amalgam stating that "the people of the state of California have determined that the use of mercury in dental amalgam causes birth defects and other health problems" The proposition also requires that permission must be obtained from a patient before placing hazardous material in the mouth. (The new law is being contested by the ADA and California Dental Association and is tied up in Federal Court)

9. Legislation is now being proposed in Minnesota for a similar "Informed Consent" legislation for all dental patients.

Conclusion:

It is our conclusion that mercury toxicity is an autoimmune disorder. This was summarized recently in an article in Advance Magazine. Its wide range of symptoms can only be accounted for by multiple adverse effects on the immune system, nerve tissue in general. The Mercury / Toxic Metal Sensitivity Questionnaire has now been tested on over 200 patients and will serve as a warning/alert to clinicians when patients have scores of "yes" in five or more of the questions. Such patients should then be refered to dentists with special knowledge of mercury amalgam removal and replacement with nontoxic composites and dental materials.

Here's something else.

MERCURY

Prepared by OHCOW

What is Mercury?

Mercury is extracted from a naturally occurring ore known as cinnabar. Mercury, often referred to as "Quicksilver' is a silvery-white heavy metal which is a liquid at room temperature. Basically, four categories of mercury exist:

(1) Elemental or metallic mercury (pure metal)

(2) Organic mercury compounds, which are bonded to carbon, e.g. alkyl mercury

(3) Inorganic mercury compounds

(4) Other organic mercury compounds

How Has Mercury Been Used?

control instruments (thermometers, barometers)

electric switches

arc lamps

mercury vapour lamps

manufacture of explosive caps and detonators

production of polyurethane foams

pesticides, fungicides

tanning

printing

dental fillings

batteries

paints

papers

medications

felt hat industry

floor wax and polish

fabric softeners

jewellery - moulding

Why is Mercury a Health Hazard?

Mercury can affect your health if it is inhaled, ingested or absorbed. Mercury can be harmful if you receive a high dose in a short period of time (acute poisoning), or if you are exposed to low doses over a long period of time (chronic poisoning). Breathing mercury vapour is the most common cause of mercury poisoning, with exposure to mercury compounds occurring less frequently. Mercury evaporates at room temperature, so even small spills of mercury can produce a significant amount of mercury vapour. Alkyl mercury compounds, used primarily in research institutions, are known to have a significantly greater toxic effect than other forms of mercury.

Mercury builds up slowly in the body, where it is retained for years, concentrating in organs, which receive the greatest supply of blood. Usually the kidney has the highest concentration, followed by the liver, the spleen, then the brain. The concentration of mercury in the brain is much higher following exposure to mercury vapour. With inorganic mercury salts, a large amount of mercury is found in the blood, but this concentration decreases quickly.

Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning:

Symptoms of acute mercury poisoning include swelling of the mouth, increased salivation, metallic taste, shaking of the limbs, stomach pain, vomiting, chest pains, cough, shortness of breath, bronchitis or pneumonia. Acute exposure to soluble inorganic salts of mercury may result in inflammation of the kidney within one to two weeks after the exposure.

Symptoms of chronic mercury poisoning may include weakness, tiredness, loss of appetite, weight loss, increased irritability, loss of memory, loss of self-confidence. Later phases of chronic poisoning are characterized by tremors of eyelids, lips, tongue, fingers and limbs, dermatitis, mental disturbances, personality changes, swelling of the mouth, excessive salivation/or dryness of the mouth, loose teeth, decreased peripheral vision and blindness.

How Does the Body Rid It self of Mercury?

Mercury is most often eliminated in the urine. It is also removed from the body by the liver in bile, by the intestines, by the sweat glands, by the lungs, in the hair, nails and from the skin. However, the majority is excreted in the urine.

Urine and blood tests may be analyzed to assess mercury exposure.

In Conclusion:

The toxic biological effects of mercury depend on the level of exposure, the route of entry, and the type of mercury. The amount of mercury exposure due to dental fillings does not appear to produce any adverse health effects.

If you should break a thermometer at home, it is important to make sure all visible mercury droplets are cleaned up by mechanical means (using a vacuum cleaner with a charcoal filter).

The symptoms of mercury poisoning are also symptoms of other diseases, thus, merely having such symptoms does not necessarily mean you have mercury poisoning. If you work with mercury and are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, contact your Health and Safety Rep, see your family doctor or the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers Inc.

Mercury is a designated substance. For further Information, see Regulation on Mercury under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Holy Cow Andrea! I only found 5 of those symptoms for mercury that I DON'T have, lol.

Good news everyone...got my new computer up and running at home and can post from home again! Yay. Bad news, work changes really got me down, AND fighting off a cold/sinus infection/or whatevertheheck it is. :)

It will be good to see you on more again Donna. :D

Work is something I don't really miss. Can anyone tell me why I still have dreams about work and always having to get back to the children, and working too long? Don't really expect an answer. I'm glad to be out of my job. My boss was not very supportive during my pregnancy. I didn't figure out until my last day that she was probably jealous that I was going to be able to be a stay at home mom (by a comment she made).

I'm sorry things aren't going well, and not feeling well on top of that makes it even more difficult. Take care of your hazard drop tomorrow and head to the conference and meet up with Susan and have a good time.

We'll expect updates from both of you. :)

Thanks Andrea for all the mercury information, very interesting. There are quite a few similarities with symptoms in comparison to Lyme's

Donna, I'm glad you got your computer up and running :D I'm sorry about the work changes, and the fact that you aren't feeling well on top of that doesn't help. Hope you feel better soon :) and hang in there about work, maybe it will all fall into place with time.

Hi Everyone- Just a quick drive by as I haven't been getting email updates from the board- something's wacky with my email account.

Hugs and love to everyone on here who needs them.

Rachel- When will you get the results? I really hope it's not Lyme. I live in Lyme Central (New England) and know quite a few people who've had it. Not fun! whatever it is, I KNOW that you are strong enough to heal. Just make sure Dave has you chew your blueberries (he sounds like a really good friend).

I'll be back, Beverly

Domingo's wife passed away... and he is home with his other 2 children trying to cope.

My daughter and son-in-law came out for a week... was fun... my son and daughter-in-law and my grandbaby found a house.... moved in...soon his computer will be hooked up and I can have mine back... they are very happy.

Ate a raw red onion right after we got an earthquake in the Gulf (which everyone felt) and thought we were going to get hit with a tsunami... and I had read that onions stop anxiety.... so I ate it... stopped thinking about earthquakes and tsunamis.... just thought about my burning sinuses.. :o:lol:

Whew.... there was more but you get the idea.

Think of you all alot.... hi to everyone!!

Cecile,

Were those the people in the accident back in June? I'm so sorry, that must be so hard for him.

Glad you got to see T & J and that you will get your computer back soon.

Red onion.....I can see how that would divert your attention.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

Good to hear from you Celia!

I'm glad you're feeling ok. :)

Domingos wife passed away??? That is soooo tragic. :( I'll keep him in my prayers.

Julie....yeah the symptoms for Lyme and mercury can be pretty much interchangeable. Thats why its really hard to know whats what. I would assume its also entirely possible to have both...which would really suck. I was thinking about this possibilty and then heard that its common to have heavy metal toxicity with Lyme. The new doctor had said there is likely a multitude of things going on. Same thing the holistic dentest said a long time ago....its like an onion...you got to get rid of one layer at a time.

AndreaB Contributor

Someone else uses the onion analogy too......maybe it was Rinne.

Hi everyone!!

Was just on here having some fun... wanted to pop in and say "hi"... wish everyone was feeling better.... I have been reading on this thread now and then but good gaaawwddd Lyme and Metal poisoning? How awful... I do hope you get some results with your tests Rachel.

I'm just plugging along... was a good day for me so I've been goofing around.... it's been fun.

Let me give you a recap for those who have followed this thread... had a couple of hurricane scares but surrived them.

Have my good days and bad days as far as health.

Oh, good grief, celia. You have some nerve to come on here and try to tell us in one measly post, all your problems and happenings. Quite frankly, I think you made up the whole "earthquake" thing just to get to eat onions and gross out your husband AND to keep your son away from your computer so you could get on here and fill us in on your life. Hurricane? What about the wind of 5 - 10 miles an hour we experienced here?!! You don't see me worried about that now do you?!!! Hey, and while I am on the subject, you need to drink more coffee.

Hi Bev,

How is going now that you've left that dreaded apartment?? Hopefully alot better. :)

I dont know when I'll get the results. Hes a new doctor so I dont know if he'll call me or what....I have an appt. with him on the 3rd....I hope I dont have to wait until then for the results.

Yeah....Dave is a really good friend. He's doing exactly what the doc told him to do....making sure I chew my food. I told him I dont like chewing so much...he said "I dont care if you like it or not....thats not the point...its gonna help you get better."

He's on top of the chewing thing. ;)

I'm getting more used to it now...I think I dont pig out as much cuz its takes forever to eat like this.

Its a good thing.... I'm not Racheling everything in sight now. :)

As Martha Stewart would say....."That's a good thing". :D

That was on our wedding party videotape. Our hostess used that phrase constantly.

I would think that it would be harder to overload your system if you couldn't eat to the point of overload.

Seth can reach the keyboard now even when I push it back so IF you guys ever get chopped off messages you'll know why.....of course I could always go back and edit. He must have got bored playing by himself, he's over picking on his mommy. :)

yeah....maybe thats it.

You know....I never see food intolerances on a Lyme symptom list.

Maybe its a seperate issue caused by leaky gut or maybe mercury. Oh man am I gonna drive myself crazy till I get those test results.

Thanks Julie and Andrea! I can't say much about the work situation yet because there are some people from work who frequent this website and we're not supposed to talk about it yet. It's a sad thing.

Hum, I DID go on a week long hiking vacation a few years ago to Vermont (thanks Bev for reminding me!)! It was a fall colors type of thing, so every day we did various length hikes through mostly wooded/rural areas. I don't remember any bite indications, but not sure I would have noticed unless it was BIG. And, of course I've had metal mouth for most of my adult life... egads, lol.

lancpa Rookie

corn contains gluten

I didn't react to it at first but as i eliminated wheat it became the next allergen. then rice. I can't eat any of those"""Glutent-Free" products. this seems like a progression a few others on here have seen as well. I even react to potato starch now. no more thickeners basically. We need a resort where everything is really truely gluten -free that we can go to for 3 months and see if we can beat this then.

My thyroid was terrible. In 4 months it returned to ideal numbers on blood tests without any Pharmaceuticals just standard process supplements my kinesiologist/chiro prescribed. no thyroid symptoms. No corn in standard Process. Basically I was treated with alot of minerals. Oh and I did some gall bladder flushes during that time, but my doc says he has had lots of peoles thyroids return to normal without cleansing/flushes.

Corn is hard. Realllyyyy hard. I'm wishing you the best of luck Maybe if people who are still only reacting to wheat limit corn now it will take them longer to get there. Or maybe if they eliminate it now since it contains gluten they can recover and add foods back in sooner. That's what I wish I had done. Here's hoping you are feeling better very soon.

I still have a lump in my throat alot and I'm not sure what is causing it. Time to do more research for mee to. Good for you that you found this out.

Daxin Explorer

Well, it's been a while but I'm just checking in.

I've been kind of sick myself, and thinking maybe that this whole Gluten free thing is not as easy as I thought.

Rachel -- I hope you find some answers soon. I hate being in the dark when I am sick. I don't know why you would hold back on doing research though. The more info you have going in, the more prepared the doctors can be no?

Ceclie -- Nice to hear from you again. Hope you sinuses recovered from that onion.

Anyone I missed -- Hi. I've been lingering here for some time but have not had much to say. I have been learning a lot though. We are heading out for a few days and I will be away from my computer for almost a week. I hope I can get caught up when I get back.

AndreaB Contributor

Have a great time Ryan! We'll see you when you get back.

Hope you feel better soon. Do you think you were cc'd or do you have other allergies/intolerances?

I'm just trying to not overload my brain. I've already researched so many diseases, diets, treatments, etc over the last couple years and since I dont have the results of the Lyme test yet I just figured I'd give myself a break for now. :)

I've already seen the doctor and given him all the history, symptoms, results of previous tests, etc. Now I just have to wait for these latest test results.

Thank you all for your advice and the dermatitis herpetiformis article. The latter made me realise I had stopped taking my antihistamine, which I will restart today. The Dapsone has cleared the rash entirely but I still get quite a bit itching, absolutely nothing to see though. I know its notoriously hard to clear and its still relatively early days for me.  The iodine issue is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of salt because I have Addison's disease and sodium retention is an issue. I also have autoimmune hypothyroidism, not sure how a low iodine diet would play into that? Because of my Addison's I am totally steroid dependent, I take steroids 4 x daily and cannot mount any defence against inflammation. I need to increase my meds for that. Now that I know what is wrong I can do just that if Im having a bad day. Life is very sweet, just so damn complicated sometimes! Hey ho, onwards. Thank you again for your advice.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you
