Skin Breakout Worse

My husband was diagnosed with DH about 17 years ago and was able to control the skin breakouts with medication and consuming very little gluten. He was diagnosed with Celiac disease about a year ago and has been gluten free ever since. However, the skin breakouts have continually gotten worse. Any suggestions about what might help or what may be causing this?

Sorry, I don't know. But a diagnosis of dh is a diagnosis of celiac, so he should have been told to be gluten-free back then!

Eating a little gluten, is eating gluten, so I would imagine it's just gotten worse as time has gone on and will clear as the gluten works its way out of his system. His body may just be taking the chance to eliminate its stores of gluten under the skin now that it's not constantly getting a fresh supply of it ... just my guess.

DH can persist for one to two years after going completely gluten free, as the deposits under the skin which cause DH take that long to clear.

Carla's theory seems to make sense. But maybe it's just 'his time' to have a bad outbreak. Take heart, it will get better sooner or later. Stick to a 100% gluten-free diet, and it will clear up eventually.

On this web site there is an article on iodine and skin eruptions. Does your husband eat alot of salt? Good luck.

I stopped using iodized salt, and I've noticed that I have no DH reaction from gluten, even when there is a GI reaction (the iodine is the only thing I can think of).

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/joim.70025 Very recent (September 2025) Finland study may be of interest. Borderline negative and low positive ant-TTG, with negative and positive EMA tests in patients diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

Thanks for the list too makes me realise why I still get symptoms after cutting gluten , all that reading has just made sense to why I'm still struggling , thankyou Scott Adams very insightful , I've been baking to and there is xanthum gum in the flour , I understand now why I still have issues with that too, and ive had to cut dairy also , i had a terrible flare few months ago and my throat also was very irritable and I had sinuses issues all makes sence 👍

Thankyou yes I read up on it beforehand , because or my trapped nerve when I have a bowel flare up it's impossible to keep still  which I will have to do for the MRI ,and it's so painful , and I know if this is what I'm thinking it to be it will cause me terrible issues , sometimes I get to the point where I just want to diagnose myself and act accordingly, because I've been at this year's , and I clearly have all the symptoms , it's so frustrating when you have all this going in and still feel no further ahead 😳
