Hello,

THANK YOU EVERYONE HERE AND ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO STARTED THIS gluten-free-FORUM!!

I've been lurking here for a couple weeks and have to say that I've learned gobs about gluten and celiac disease. I've had IBS problems for years and have begun to suspect being celiac, but at the very least, am gluten intollerant.

My symptoms are delayed and I've never really known how to "read" them. But, after reading what you all here have said, I am beginning to be able to tell when I've eaten gluten (or possibly casein, or both) by what happens to my body the following few days.

I ate at Applebee's last Friday, began getting bad D 15 hours later on Sat. morning, and felt yukky, dizzy, foggy-brained and flat out exhausted until Mon. morning. All the stuff that I've experienced in the past without a clue to what I had eaten (or when) that triggered the symptoms. NOW I KNOW WHY! (I later searched for Applebee's and discovered that it is not a celiac-friendly restaurant.)

I've been searching like mad for restaurants and food products and have a list of safe places and foods that I wouldn't ever have found on my own. I'm soooo glad I found this place!

I plan to get tested by Enterolab in the near future. Have been without insurance for the last 10 years and since my husband retired from the Army Reserves last month, we now have health insurance.

Does anyone know if health insurance companies are likely to reimburse tests like this without my first having seen a doctor? (I don't "do" MDs if I can help it.)

Welcome!

I didn't try to find out if they'd cover it. I guess I wasn't up for the fight. I agree with you about MD's! Anyway, Enterolab ended up being less expensive than my portion of the other tests after insurance paid their part!!

I'm still fussing with my insurance co. over reimbursement, but I really suspected it would be a fight at the outset. It was money well spent. I would have always been questioning myself and no one in my family would have taken me seriously. I applaud your M.D. avoidance. I am at that point myself. I am so glad you found this forum. It has been a lifesaver for me as well. Welcome :)

Welcome Velda and I am glad that you have found this forum very helpful. I have been gluten-free for 28 months and I still learn something new from this forum. Remember that we do not consider any question stupid.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.
