I'm getting my first massage tomorrow :) and was wondering if the oils they use will be okay for celiacs?

They ought to be, but have them check the ingredients. I have them use a hypoallergenic massage cream on me.

I'm a massage therapist and I use hypoallergenic massage oils and gels... Have the therapist check and make sure there is no wheat germ oil in the blend... I use TheraPro or Biotone massage gels... so if it's either of those brands it's safe... if it's the Aveda massage oil, def. check because I think that has wheat germ oil in it. Any other brands I'm not as familiar with so just have your therapist check the ingredients for you. If they can't you might want to consider carrying a lotion that you like that you know is safe (I don't like massaging as well with lotions but some therapists don't mind and especially with an "allergy or intolerance" issue...)

When I was in Las Vegas last winter, the spa I went to used a product for massages that had wheat. I went in the day before, but you could go in early for your appt. and read through all the ingredients of everything they used. Some stuff had wheat, others didn't. We ended up using something coconut based, that was wonderful. I'm sure they'll have something for you, but definately read ingredients.

Thanks for the info, I'm new to Celiac and would never guessed lotions or shampoo can have wheat in them. Speaking of shampoos I'm trying Tresemme and now the base of my scalp itches like crazy when i'm washing. I could scratch holes in my scalp it I didnt have control. Have you heard of this?

I was told by a doctor that lotions / shampoos etc containing wheat/gluten should not have an effect on me (unless I ingest them obviously)... is this true?

The doctor's think that. Our experience on the board seems to show otherwise.

Do you EVER touch your hair? If so you could ealsy transfer the residual shampoo (NO it does not come off with rinisng) to your hands, then to anything you eat.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
