How Long Did It Take You To See A Difference?

Okay, we started DS (age 6) on a trial gluten-free diet, and I'm wondering how long I should expect it to take before we notice a difference - if, in fact, gluten is a problem for him. (Brief recap: his only symptoms are anxiety and bed-wetting, and he had a definitely negative TTG test, so the main reason why I suspect that gluten *might* be a problem for him is that MY anxiety level has improved so much since going gluten-free. In other words, we're not exactly working off a firm diagnosis here!) We're on day 4, and I haven't seen any noticeable change in him yet - except that he's been complaining of headaches when it gets close to mealtime, and eating seems to take care of them. (Sounds like low blood sugar to me.) For those of you who had kids whose main symptom was anxiety, how long did it take you to notice a difference?

With some people it takes a long time. I think it depends on how sick a person is.

I know my anxiety got better when I quit wheat two years ago, but I can't remember if it was sudden or not. Since I quit gluten a couple months ago, my itching has gotten better right away, but the rest of the changes I hope for are taking their time.

Good luck.

Just a little while after I posted this, DS had a really gross poop (so much so that he called me to come "investigate" it!) - very loose and paler than usual. Since he never had any GI symptoms ON gluten, I was kind of surprised. Detox, maybe?

My DD (now on 13th week gluten-free) seemed to get worse during the first week trial. More pain in her belly, lots and lots of very loose pale poop, headaches and rolling-around-in-bed cramps. At about 12-13 days she improved almost overnite. Felt better, no pain, normal poop.

So give it time!

It took me two weeks before I could tell if I had been glutened. I felt a bit better each day, but after two weeks I really could tell a difference.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
