Are the celiac disease symptoms sporadic?

Yesterday I got sick after eating a hashbrown casserole made with campbells cream of cheddar and cream of chicken soups. I didn't get sick after eating a roast been sandwich or pizza!

Today I just feel like a truck ran over me. My body aches something fierce. I've been noticing these body aches for a few weeks now, but today is the worse. Last night I couldn't even get comfortable because my shoulders hurt so bad! I haven't worked out or done anything different.

The diahhrea is going away. I have had it even since the major cramps/pains went away. The cramps/pain have been interrmittent.

I thought I had something to tell my doctor, hopefully to get a diagnosis, but now I feel I might be wrong. I'm sure these celiac disease symptoms are the same for other ailments. I was hoping to avoid a lot of unnecessary tests if I could give my doctor a clue!

Also, I am losing weight. I'm seriously overweight and this is a good thing. But it's never been this easy before! I am eating a lot less because I seem full faster and am tired of being sick. Still, this makes me so nervous because weight loss is always a cancer symptom!

Hi! and welcome to the board! :)

My symptoms were similar to yours in the year before my diagnosis. I had what I now know were Celiac symptoms for many years before, but they really kicked in then. I also lost weight--I was slightly overweight at the time, but it was just falling off--something that had never happed to me before! Yes, when you are following a "normal" gluten containing diet, your symptoms may not have any rhyme or reason to them. I did not have D every time I ate something with gluten, looking back. The achiness is also a symptom that I had--especially my neck and shoulders.

I think you should definately see your doctor. Ask him/her to do the complete Celiac Blood Panel (5 tests). Normal bloodwork won't tell you anything regarding Celiac. Go over all of your symptoms with the doctor--even any that you don't think pertain to this.

The symptoms won't necessarily hit you immediately. There can be some time delay. If it is celiac, your symptoms are due to the sum total of the gluten you've been ingesting, not just a particular item.

Regarding your doctor: Tell them what's going on. Demand a celiac panel.

Yes, it's possible to not feel sick after eating gluten. A few weeks ago I ate something with gluten and didn't get sick at all. And sometimes I get very sick. But it doesn't matter how sick you feel, gluten is still doing damage to your intestines if you do have celiac. I'd go get tested. It certainly can't hurt anything.

When I was first going gluten-free I couldn't tell if I had gluten for about 2 weeks. Before I went off gluten I didn't have D after every single meal, I didn't have headaches everyday, just most of the time. After 2 weeks being gluten-free I could tell when I was glutened. Before that I didn't feel great all the time, but I didn't always feel bad. So, I think it takes awhile for glutening symptoms to go away for you to really see how you feel when you eat gluten.

Now that I've been gluten-free for 6 months I can tell within 20 minutes that I have been glutened. Over the months I have been shocked at how bad I used to feel all the time. I wish I realized I wasn't supposed to feel like that sooner.

It is great that you are losing weight. If that is important to you, why not stay gluten-free just for that benefit. If you stick to the diet for a few weeks you may see that you feel better off gluten, or you may just lose weight.

Not to pick nits, but she's probably losing weight due to malabsorption right now. She's not yet off gluten long enough to impact weight either way.

Actually, I'm not off gluten at all right now. I'm trying to stay on until I see my doctor on Aug 4. The first time ever I have to wait for an appointment because she's on vacation! lol

As you said, If you want to be tested, please stay on gluten or your results will not be accurate for Celiac.

August 4 is just around the corner. You can do it.

      What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

      I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.

      I believe the GFCO does use a common logo for certified gluten free products (those containing not more that 10ppm of gluten) but nothing universal yet from the FDA for standard gluten free products (those containing not more that 20ppm).

      I have a One Pot and decided to start using it one day. I was hesitant at first making my own yogurt, but was surprised at how easy it was. I like mine better too.

      Because I spend so much time reading every word on all food packaging, I personally would greatly appreciate it if there was one common gluten-free symbol written in large-enough text, and always located in the same place. That alone will make shopping easier and faster. I dread having to buy packaged food. Thank you very much for asking,
