I'd love to share tips on where to eat, if anyone's out there.

There's a new place in Berkeley called Socca Oven that's supposed to be entirely gluten-free. Has anyone tried it out?

They say on their site "Everything served at Socca Oven is gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and sugar free, yet still succulent !!! "

Hey!

I am in Marin County and haven't found any gluten-free only places, however I have had great experiences (and no reactions and I am pretty sensitive to CC) at Picco in Larkspur and Sabor of Spain in San Rafael. The staff there is great and very helpful.

I always bring dining cards to any restaurant I go to and it helps a LOT!

I hear Pasta Pomodoro has Rice Pasta, but I haven"t checked that out yet.

I keep you posted as I find more places :)

Cheers,

Katja

That's some great info, thank you! I think I might just try it out during the summer/fall school break.

Hi Everybody!

I am so excited to hear about the restaurant in Berkeley!

There is a great restaurant up in Davis (far, but worth it!!!) that is completely gluten/casein free!!! It is sooo yummy; they have pastas, sandwiches, pot pies, pizza, tacos and desserts! They also have baked goods for sale.

I went there today and had vegetable pizza and peach pie!

Here is the website:

Cool - Thanks for sharing. I never go up to Davis but if I ever do I'll check it out.

Has anyone been to Cafe Gratitude? I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of their foods are gluten-free. They're in SF & Berkeley

Hi donna! Nice to meet you. Where do you live? I"m in Oakland.

So I just got an e-mail from Cafe Gratitude (Berkeley/SF)... They are indeed ENTIRELY gluten-free, wheat-free and milk-product-free! I'm so excited. Tomorrow's my birthday and I think I'll treat myself to one of their yummy deserts.

I'm in Modesto, and I have not found a safe place to eat yet, besides Chili's and Outback.

My boyfriend lives in the Berkeley area, so I can't wait to try all those restaurants when I visit him! :D

Happy B-day!!!! (a little early I know) :D

Hope you have a great day tomorrow!

Unfortunately I have no dining experiences to share...I dont eat out right now but thought I'd see who was eating what and where in the Bay Area (in case I ever do get to eat out). :P

I travel back and forth....My home is in the valley (Manteca) and I spend my weekdays in the South Bay...where I work. Gas prices are much too high for commuting these days.

Thanks for the b-day wishes!

So I didn't get to go to Cafe Gratitude yesterday for some gluten-free birthday cake/pie... But I did get a YUMMY dinner at Ajanta in Berkeley, which is the tastiest Indian restaurant I've ever been to. And it didn't make me sick in the least (miraculously, even the dish that contained dairy didn't make me sick... Now that's some birthday magic for ya!)

Hi Amber! The resturant is called Natural food Works, it is right in downtown Davis. The website is naturalfoodworks.com, try typing it into google if you can't get it to work. It is sooo yummy! It is open everyday besides sunday. Check it out! :)

I've posted this before but it was so great I don't want anyone to miss it. I just visited to the Bay area. I had great experiences eating outside at the seafood grotto down by fisherman's wharf. You can watch STEAM all the seafood in desinated steam kitchens. I opt not to risk the cocktail sauce so maybe you'd feel better bringing your own. I just had squeezed lemon. It was so good I kept going back (and I hate touristy areas). I also ate great sushi in the Castro. Beware of the soy sauce. Some of the best meals I've had out in a long time and have to pass the word to any seafood lovers out there.

Hi, just wanted to say thanks for recommending Socca Oven! We tried it last night and it's YUMMY.

Susan - Yay, I'm glad you liked it!

I tried it for the first time on Saturday and... OMG ... YUM! It was so good. Which kind did you get? I had the one with anchovies, carmelized onions and kalamata olives. I've heard that they're not doing the briskest business there so I want to make sure I go regularly to support them. Also I was surprised for such an upscale area that the food was so inexpensive. I paid $5.75 for my "pizza"/socca and it was more than enough to fill me up.

Apparently the gelato place right next to it has many gluten-free flavors, too. They were nice and seemed relatively knowledgeable.

I actually had 2, brought one home with me. I had the pork one, which was great, and the eggplant, which was pretty good (I liked the pork better). I was surprised it was so cheap too. I sure hope they can stay in business. I'll definitely go up there as often as I can.

The gelatto looked great! I didn't get any because they were about to close and I figured they wouldn't want me giving them the 3rd degree about ingredients at that point. My boyfriend had some though.

I have found that in addition to gluten, I am sensitive to inulin/chicory root fiber. I wondered why I had gastrointestinal symptoms after drinking a Chobani yogurt drink - much like being glutened. Happened at least twice before I figured out that it was that chicory root fiber additive. I do not react to ordinary dairy, yogurt, etc.  For the holidays, I will only be baking gluten-free treats. I got rid of all gluten-containing flours, mixes and pastas in my kitchen. Much easier to avoid cross-contamination that way!

It's great to hear that your gluten-free journey has been going well overall, and it's smart to be a detective when a reaction occurs. Distinguishing between a gluten cross-contamination issue and a reaction to high fiber can be tricky, as symptoms can sometimes overlap. The sudden, intense, food poisoning-like hour you experienced does sound more consistent with a specific intolerance or contamination, as a high-fiber reaction typically involves more digestive discomfort like bloating or gas that lasts longer. Since the protein bar was the only new variable, it’s a strong suspect; it's worth checking if it contains ingredients like sugar alcohols (e.g., maltitol, sorbitol) or certain fibers (inulin/chicory root) that are notorious for causing acute digestive upset, even in gluten-free products. For your holiday baking, your plan is solid: bake the gluten-free items first, use entirely separate utensils and pans (not just washed), and consider color-coding tools to avoid mix-ups. Additionally, store your gluten-free flours and ingredients well away from any airborne wheat flour, which can stay in the air for hours and settle on surfaces. Keep listening to your body and introducing new packaged foods one at a time—it’s the best way to navigate and pinpoint triggers on your journey.
