Are there any support groups in our area? I live outside NE Cola. and going to West Cola. is an hour drive for us. My 13 year old daughter was diagnosed with celiac 5 years ago. Now that we hit the teen years she seems to have more trouble coping. Any Info. would be helpful.

Hey!

I live in W Cola and have been going to Charlotte for better selection of gluten-free foods and for support. Is there a support group in W Cola that you've been attending?? I'd love to talk to you further....i'm still relatively new to this area and am desperately seeking a dr. Was planning to just go to Charlotte but if you have some info i'd love to hear more...

There is a support group in West Cola. I don't have the info with me at the moment but will be at home tomarrow night and will pm you. We have not been because its so far away and is geared towards adults. :( Have you tried Earth Fare or Rosewood Market? They may not have everything but between the two we get what we need :D . My daughter will be glad to know shes not the only celiac in all of SC. :lol: She feels like it now.

COOL, that is great news that there is a group in W Cola & thank you for shooting me the info tomorrow or whenever you can so I can see what's happening. Sorry it tends to focus on adults...bummer! Maybe your daughter could be the pioneer for a teen group??? Just a thought....

Yes, I swing thru Earthfare for the bare essentials! It just gets so expensive....there's a bit of competition in Charlotte so sometimes prices are a bit lower & I have friends who live there so it's a mini vacation for me to get away for the day to shop gluten-free and see my friends :) When you shoot me the support group info, fill me in about Rosewood Market...never heard of it....but then again i'm still learning the area so Go Figure! HA!

Rosewood has a smaller selection then Earthfare. It is not far from Earth Fare. I might have to check out Charlotte when we go to Carowinds! Is there any place in particular that is really good? And not hard to find(directions not my best virtue)

hey I'm in Columbia too, I had no idea there was a support group here... Could you PM me about it too?

I do a lot of shopping at Earthfare, but yes it gets a bit expensive. I just recently heard of a place called 14 Carrot Whole Foods in Lexington (www.14carrot.net). It looks like it might be a good possibility, although I guess it would be a little out of the way for the NE Cola people! I live closer to the NW side of town.

Thanks for posting! So exciting to FINALLY find some other celiacs around here.

I too have heard and actually passed by 14carrots. Haven't been in there yet though. The name alone screams expensive...get it? 14carrots??? 14 carats??? :lol:

In Charlotte I like Talley's Green Grocery and they also have an Earthfare (I haven't been to that one though b/c I went to Talley's instead the last time I was up there & b/c I hit the really NICE AND BIG Earthfare in Charleston a few weekends ago). Also, I've heard the SuperTarget out in Morrisville has some gluten-free stuff way less expensive than what we pay for things at EarthFare, Whole Foods, etc. Here's the contact info:

I just got my daughter back from dads and told her there is TWO other people in Cola. that have celiac. She got so excited. She wanted to know if you where her age(13) I told her I was pretty sure you weren't. :lol::lol: She said "Thats ok I'll like them anyway." She is such a turkey! I better go finish dinner before she eats all the mac & cheese. :rolleyes:

I'm 24, live in Columbia, and I've been gluten free for like a month and a half.

I'm getting in on the end of this conversation, but can I get some info if anyone finds a support group that still exists?

And to share my findings - almost everything at El Burrito (Harden St) is gluten free (save the flour tortillas on a burrito). I'm friends with the manager and eat there almost every day. And when I started gluten-free, she was one of the few people who'd ever actually HEARD of gluten. My favorite is the salad with chicken and beans. YUM.

Also, went to Baan Sawan (Thai food - Devine St) on Saturday and had the pad basil- no reaction. Next up to try is the peanut curry...

Welcome ! Well at least we've grown from 1 all the way up to incredible number 4 !!!!(the Sesame Street Count laughs with thunder here) Can you tell we don't have cable? I still haven't heard anything from any of the groups so it might be that you 4 are the only ones in Cola. I was telling Turtle that when it cools down maybe we can get together for a picnic at Finley Park. I have to go take the short man to karate :ph34r: I YA!!

oh my goodness, that's so great! i've just kinda been avoiding restaurants lately because i don't like having to go through the whole educating-the-waiters routine. ;) i'll definitely have to try those places though!

I have a huge addiction to Jersey Mike's. Do you know if the meats, cheese, etc is gluten free? We are going to Game Day on Saturday and we always get Jersey Mike's before a game. I was hoping to just get all the "good stuff" and put it on some bread I pick up from Earth Fare. Thanks!

I haven't chanced any sandwich places...do they have a website or something you can check? for example, I know boar's heads meats are all gluten-free, and certain brands of condiments are okay. So theoretically you could get a sub from Publix on your own bread (depending on what type of condiments they use)...but it all depends on how concerned over CC you are.

Personally, I'd be wary. And I'd hate to get sick while tailgating...eww! Let us know how it goes!

Well poo :angry: ! I hardly ever think of cc, but I guess I need to start. At first I was just so concerned with cutting out the obvious! Guess it would be a horrible idea to eat from a place that is covered in bread. I really want to have a good time at the game. Does Earth Fare have a deli or something where I can pick up some lunch or any other other suggestions? Thanks for the advice.

YES! Earthfare has some awesome foods. They have a hot buffet line as well as a salad bar that I believe is up for all three meals. Things seem to be clearly labeled as to what they contain. Again CC is an issue at any buffet line, but if you asked them a question they'd probably know what you were talking about! They also have a deli where they make stuff on the spot for you - I haven't eaten there since going gluten-free but it seems like a good place to start.

      Hi @trents, yes I've had my levels checked in Dec 2025 which revealed vit D deficiency. I considered eggs although they only contain about 45 IU vitamin D/egg. I need 2000 IU vitamin D for maintenance as per my doctor. Although now, I likely need way more than that to treat the deficiency. My doctor has yet to advise me on dosing for deficiency. I've also considered cod liver oil, although again, if it's processed in a facility that has gluten, especially on flour form, I worried to test it, even if they have protocols in place to mitigate cross-contamination with gluten.

      Welcome to celiac.com, @Jane02! Have you had your serum D levels checked for deficiency/sufficiency? What about cod liver oil? Egg yolks can also be a good source of vitamin D.

      Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?

      Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
