An Almost-great Experience At Swiss Chalet In Smiths Falls

My DD (5yo) has been gluten-free since April 1st this year and a treat for her was to go to a gluten-free restaurant whilst on vacation last week. We had all good intentions to go to Outback but when we arrived found it was closed for lunch :( so we ix-nayed that and went to Swiss Chalet. I did everything right - called first and talked to the manager who was so well-acquainted with Celiac disease - her father has it. She was so so so helpful (thanks Carla!) and assured me that they have a dedicated fryer "just for fries" . She called the night manager to make sure that nothing else had gone into that fryer and that night mgr said that he couldn't think of anything that might have gone into the grease other than fries per their policy. She told me to ask for her upon arrival, which I did. We ordered for our DD, chicken, fries and a baked potato (she was just so happy to eat in a restaurant again...). Carla stood over the person preparing the food to make sure that there was absolutely no cross-contamination. She even came to me twice with products so that I could review the ingredient listings - once with the fries bag and once with the gravy/sauce bag, bless her heart. She was just so attentive. We thanked her profusely and I took DD to the kitchen to wave and say thanks before we left.

Then, later that day ka-sploosh. She filled the toilet and had a bigroundbelly.

Luckily, it passed quickly (especially since we were travelling the next day 10 hours in the car :unsure: ) so maybe it was a slight cc with the grease?

I bear absolutely no ill-will. She warned me that they couldn't be 100% sure.

Anyway, I'm beginning to learn that my DD has different intensities to her reactions to gluten. From 3 days of nasty disposition, bloated belly and bad toilet episodes... to a half-day on the toilet and bloating but no nasty disposition.

Kudos to Carla though. I guess I should have said " no " to the fries since they couldn't tell me FOR SURE... but all wasn't lost.

Poor pet did have a little accident in her undies though - she was upset at that more than anything.

Guess you live and learn.

Thanks though to Swiss Chalet - they're really trying and I for one really appreciate it. They gave me their allergy guide and there is so much a celiac can eat there!

NICE POST. THANKS FOR SHARING. IT'S NICE TO POST WHEN PEOPLE HELP AND IT SEEMS THEY ARE WILL ING TO LOOK INTO WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED IT.

THAT'S WHAT HAPPEN WITH MY RED ROBBIN REST..THEY ARE REALLY REALLY TRY ESP LIKE GETTING ME OIL FOR ff W/O SOY AND COOK MY FF IN A TOTALLY SEPARATE POT..REALLY GOING ALL OUT.

AGAIN THANKS FOR THE GOOD WORDS. IF THERE IS A CORP OFFICE (DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS A CHAIN) BUT THERE IS ANOTHER THREAD TONIGHT RE: OUTBACK RECALLING AND CHANING THEIR gluten-free MENU DO TO SOMEONE'S REACTION...

      But M&M's contain milk, and would not be at all like a Tootsie Roll.

      I appreciate you validating me because medical is an issue and it's not ok at all they they do this. Some days I just want to call the news media and just call out these doctors especially when they are supposed to be specialist Downplaying when gluten-free when they should know gluten-free is false negative. Now dealing with other issues and still crickets for disability because I show no signs of celiac BECAUSE IM GLUTENFREE! Actively dealing with sibo and skin issues.Depression is the key because thats all they know, im depressed because medical has caused it because of my celiac and related issues. I should have never ever been employed as a bus driver.After 3 years still healing and ZERO income desperately trying to get better but no careteam for celiac other than stay away frim wheat! Now im having care because my head is affected either ms or meningioma in go in tomorrow again for more scans.I know im slowly dying and im looking like a disability chaser

      M&M Peanuts. About the same calories and sugar while M&M Peanuts have fiber, potassium, iron and protein that Tootsie Rolls ("We are currently producing more than 50 million Tootsie Rolls each day.") don't. Click the links to compare nutritional values.  Both are made with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.  I use them as a gluten free substitute for a peanut butter sandwich.  Try her on grass fed, pasture fed milk. While I get heartburn at night from commercial dairy milk, I do not from 'grassmilk'.

      I see it everyday on my feeds.  They go out and buy gluten-free processed products and wonder why they can't heal their guts.  I don't think they take it as a serious immune disease. They pick up things off the internet which is so far out in left field.  Some days I would just like to scream.  So much better when we had support groups and being able to teach them properly. I just had an EMA blood test because I haven't had one since my Doctor moved away.  Got test results today, doctor ordered a D3 vitamin test.  Now you know what  type of doctors we have.  Now I will have to pay for this test because she just tested my D3 end of December, and still have no idea about my EMA.
