Gluten-free Restaurant In Calgary, Alberta, Canada

I'm travelling to Canada for two weeks and I read somewhere on the message board...awhile back...about a gluten-free restaurant in Calgary, Alberta. However, I can't find that information. Can anyone out there give me the name and address of this restaurant? I would greatly appreciate your help! (so would my daughter who would benefit the most!)

It's called Splitt Pourhouse & Grill at 7746 Elbow Drive S.W. (about 5 blocks south of Glenmore on Elbow Dr.)

If you do a search on this site for Splitt, there will be a couple of threads with reviews, etc. We haven't been because my gluten-free son is only 6 and so far they aren't letting kids in because it's a restaurant/bar/lounge.

My understanding was that only after 4:00 they don't allow kiddos...but they do for breakfast and lunch. Does that sound right? I guess I'll just look 'em up and call them directly. My daughter is 9.

Hmm. Not sure about that. I spoke to the owner the second or third day after it opened and he said maybe they would start allowing kids, but just then they weren't letting kids in. Call them and double check.

Clamato is NOT gluten-free! Heinz Tomato juice is though, and it works for Caesars, etc.

Back on topic...does anyone know where to get gluten-free beer in Canada? I have not had much luck and it looks like I really will have to import it. :(

I plan on taking a road trip out to Calgary, so I will let you know what I think of Splitt. Not sure exactly WHEN, but a chance to eat out without worry is at the top of my list, so soon.

I live in Winnipeg, MB and Regina, SK (for school), and I can tell you that Regina overall is quite good for eating out and buying gluten-free, especially for a small (200,000 ppl) city. Shelley Case, a RD with Celiac lives here. She has also published a well known book on Celiac, but the name escapes me right now. I think she has personally gone to certain restaurant chains here to explain CC and the gluten-free diet. 9/10 times every restaurant I go to is familiar with the gluten-free diet at least somewhat. Nothing is guaranteed of course, but at least you don't get that blank stare... :unsure: There are also health food stores (Old Fashion Foods) that sell every gluten-free product imaginable throughout the city. Winnipeg has about 700,000 ppl, and is not NEARLY as Celiac friendly. I couldn't find 1 bakery in Winnipeg to make me a gluten-free cake for my birthday (They laughed! The nerve!), but my bf was able to get 1 whole cake in Regina in one day. I almost ate it just as fast ;)

Western Sellers is the only liquor store in Alberta (that I know of) that sells Le Messagerie gluten-free beer. The only gluten-free beer in Canada.

I just got some La Messagere at Alberta Spirits! Seems like they're expanding where they sell it.

I wasn't a beer drinker before, but this stuff isn't too bad.

Western Sellers is the only liquor store in Alberta (that I know of) that sells Le Messagerie gluten-free beer. The only gluten-free beer in Canada.

It's delicious. The store I buy it at used to bring in small quantities and now they order two pallets every order and they sell fast.

      I do eat 4 slices of wheat bread with almond butter. Yes it was a reference to my iron consumption.

      To give you a frame of reference for pretesting gluten consumption necessary to ensure valid antibody testing, here is the current recommendation for those who have been on a gluten free diet: The daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for at least two weeks. Not sure why you mentioned eggs and chicken. They are not sources of gluten. Was that in reference to dietary iron consumption?

      Thanks for your insight. I've been eating wheat bread at least 5 times a week for several months. I've been eating chicken or eggs 5 days a week for at least a year.
