How Long Before Symptoms Show After Being Glutened?

Hello :)

Ill try to make this short. I havent been diagnosed with GI or Celiac. However due to numerous bowel problems for years, ie: pain so bad I was passing out, sweating, D and C movements, bloating etc. I decided to go gluten free. Im CONVINCED I have it, but I dont trust the Doctors due to obvious personal reasons of being diagnosed from everything under the sun that I KNOW I did NOT have!

My first week was great on my new diet. NO pain!!! I get pains ALL the time.

I decided to eat gravy on fries about a week after, immediately I got pain and severe bloating for 9 hours!!!!! Then 3 days later it passed in pain...

I stayed gluten-free free for another 3 weeks. NO problems again! -Im eating dairy though throughout this. No probs with Dairy.

Today I decided to test myself again. I ate some fruit loops and the corner of a wheat and rye cracker... no pains? I can feel a teensy tiny bit of bloating. It doesnt hurt or anything, and it may not even be bloating. Im sitting here waiting for something to happen. lol. Nothings happening. Is this normal? Or maybe I dont have GI? I was hoping this test would convince me 100% but now Im wondering. Should I eat more wheat to see? Im afraid of the pain though if I am and if it shows up later...

Any help would be great. I thought after 3 weeks of being gluten-free free, it would show up quickly if I as much as tasted the corner of bread...

I find that the longer I am gluten-free, the longer it takes for me to react (while for some people it is the opposite). Last year I'd have awful D within minutes of eating gluten, while now I get a stomach ache pretty soon, but the D won't start until a whole WEEK later! But it always comes, without fail, eventually, and I'll be miserable for a few days.

How do I know this? :ph34r: Well, I have to admit that I have doubted my self-diagnosis a few times, and got sick of being on this diet and purposely ate something with gluten. I always regretted it soon enough. :blink:

Im so pleased to hear this. Im thinking the same thing too in regards self diagnosis. Im actually still sitting here waiting to feel pain lolol... Sounds a bit pathetic but my family thinks its in my head... well their reactions are anyways. They all tell me to get tested. I cant exactly get tested now that Im off gluten because the results arent as good so it wont matter. They dont understand. They think its stress or from eating a junky diet which I do NOT. I eat tons of good healthy raw foods. Im kind of hoping I get the pain in a few days just so I can have a EUREKA moment... once again.... Then I SWEAR I wont do it again... well...

I really appreciate the response. I thought it was an immediate reaction considering I had an immediate reaction a few weeks ago with the gravy.

Long before I returned to my gluten-free diet I gave up eating sauces and gravies that had been thickened because I suffered terrible pain and D almost immediately after having them.

Maybe you can be more sensitive to gluten in one form than another which in turn causes a variation in reaction times and severity of the reaction itself. Not sure but someone here will be able to give you more accurate advice.

Thank you! That's a really good point. I never thought of it like that. Well I guess Im going to swear off the gluten again now that I ate some cereal and a bit of cracker and see what happens... Im tempted to eat more. Its like I WANT something to happen NOW so I can say oh yeah... Ugh!

      First, welcome to the forum, @boy-wonder! Second, a little clarification in terminology is in order. Granted, inconsistency is rampant when it comes to the terminology associated with gluten disorders, but it has more or less become settled in this fashion: "Gluten intolerance" is a general term that car refer to either celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). "Gluten Sensitivity" is the shortened version of NCGS. Third, Celiac disease is not an allergy to gluten. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by gluten ingestion causing the immunes system to attack the lining of the small bowel, causing damage to it over time due to the constant inflammation that wears...

      Has anyone found a gluten free parakeet seed mix? I can't find a single one! My doctor wants me to make sure all pet food in the house is gluten free but I'm not sure if that's even possible with parakeets. We love our birds so much! I'm wondering if anyone has ever made their own bird seed mix if gluten free ones are not available.

      Hi, new member. About me, I had been suffering with weight gain, bloating and irregular and extreme bowel habits for a year or so. For example, I went on holiday in 2023, then again I  2024 at the same time of year and every shirt I wore in 2023 didn't fit anymore, couldn't even do the buttons up. Being in my mid 50s I put it down to age and middle aged spread. I'd been lucky all my life having good metabolism and being able to eat anything and as much as I like without putting on any weight, it drove my other half mad. Over a conversation with a friend health and age Related stuff came up and he mentioned someone he knew who had recently found out they were gluten...

      thank you, i have been doing that the last few weeks and will continue to do so. I had not had my ttg iga checked since I was diagnosed 14 yrs ago so I am not sure if they ever dropped below the 15-20 range.    all my other labs are completely normal but I am concerned that this may be signs of refractor celiac or something else since I'm so careful with gluten-free diet
