Reactions To Gluten

I was wondering how you all react when you have been glutened. I have just started going gluten free. I am currently waiting my EnteroLab results(had normal blood test results for celiac). I had been off gluten for exactly a week when I had some, which I did on purpose. My stomach got bloated and crampy and stayed that way for 4 or 5 days. Then I went back to gluten free and have been for 2 weeks now. But, the biggest thing I noticed was that I was in very bad mood during my gluten reaction. I would say that that was my biggest reaction. The stomach issues weren't all that bad, though I could go without the bloat and my pants not fitting properly. I was just curious, is anyone else's biggest reaction in their mood rather than in their gut? Or atleast a noticeable reaction. I am just amazed that gluten could have been causing my moody tendencies all these years. When I don't eat it, I just feel happier in general and less anxious. I never realized I was a nervous, anxious person until I saw that I am seemingly more relaxed when I don't comsume gluten. I am just fascinated by it all. Anyway, I look forward to hearing what all of you think about this. Thanks.

Hi mcs12--welcome! :)

I most definately get moody and cranky when glutened! I get so annoyed, I want to jump out of my skin. Not pleasant!

I also get GI reactions (D, nausea, bloating, etc) about 2 hours after ingesting the culprit.

I'm gluten-free now for 14 months--it dosen't happen as often as it used to--I don't eat many processed foods and rarely eat out. The last time it happened, I was only sick for a couple of days--for me, each episode is a little different in how long it lasts.

I was just diagnosed, and now that I know all the different symptoms, it all adds up! I have alot of symptoms that I just lived with or wrote off before this. I am exausted, extremely irritable, cloudy headed, horrible stomach pains, bloating, gas, diareah, and just discomfort in general. Some of the weird ones I get are itchy skin, joint pain, muscle pain, horrible leg cramps while sleeping, and rarely the depression bug bites me. Alot of these have been around for a long time, the gi symptoms and weight loss are what in the end led me to a diagnosis of celiac.

I believe my celiac disease reactions to ingesting gluten after going gluten-free are:

brain fog

anxiety

nervousness

paranoia

fatigue

insomnia

constipation, then diarrhea

floating stools

gas

weight loss

stomach pain (only sometimes)

When I eat wheat, I seem to get celiac disease reactions and wheat allergy reactions so I find it hard to differentiate between the two. I believe that my allergy reactions are (And I'm not sure if they are from wheat or milk yet):

heart palpitations

heart pain

heart racing

respiratory problems

hives and/or rash

feeling like my throat is closing over

short black outs

dizziness

feeling like I'll pass out

Wow, when you described these allergy reactions, I never relaized that I also have many of these. The heart palps, heart pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness. I have been thinking of cutting out dairy as a test, now I think I just might. Thank you for mentioning this!!

I think I found a huge culprit for severe reactions to create worsening of my c symptoms. Do people with celiac have sensitivity and /or have opposite reaction to certain medications Where can I find a list ?  I'm new here I'm.wondering why I am getting worse when I take certain medicine...the burning feet.  Rebound muscle pain so intense  How many people get opposite effects or have a horrible attack after these meds

Does anyone know if that includes scrambled eggs and healthy smart butter (,gluten free) I add a very tiny amount of margarine less than a teaspoon.  I did no't have any bread    It just seems like no matter what I eat my stomach and nerves over fire and here comes a host of horrible symptoms. My lower abdomen feels horrible, my right leg thigh muscle.. very odd. Jaw pain. Burning feet , joint pain , you name it  The anxiety just creeps up into brain fog. I don't think I could explain this to anyone who is unfamiliar.  Also,  I most likely will not remember posting this until I check it.  This is highly unusual for me because I have an excellent memory.  One weekend before I knew anything about celiac I lost an entire weekend from severe brain fog, confusion, pain, etc.  I honestly thought I was losing my mind. When I think back I recall eating a lot of PBJ sandwiches and turkey sandwiches.  Once again did not know about gluten.  I was just too sick to cook. Do people fast during attacks ?? It seems horrible to keep going through this. I hope I'm not causing my own problems... I wonder if I should fast because I'm not eating gluten .  Chicken ,  scrambled eggs no milk , canned carrots,  gluten free low sugar low fat Greek yogurt which I already posted about 😞 Any suggestions I am open... I am bedridden when this happens to me.  Thank you Celiac community. 🙏🏻❤️

Yeah, that sounds super familiar. When inflammation levels are high — especially at the start of changing your diet — the body often develops a fructose and lactose intolerance. Unfortunately, the only thing that really helps is cutting out anything that isn’t lactose-free or that contains sugar. So basically, stick to meat, veggies, fish…

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you
