I Made My Own Ginger Ale Today

I made an infusion from fresh ginger, sweetened it, and added some to sparkling mineral water. This was SO good. Here's what I did.

diced some fresh ginger root (peel off the outer bark. cut thin slices, then cut them up in small pieces - maybe next time I'll try grating the ginger.) Ended up with about a tablespoon of ginger.

Dropped the ginger in about 1-1/2 cup of water that had come to a boil but was no longer boiling, and let it sit for about a half hour and then strained the ginger out of the water.

I sweetened the water with sugar and stevia - about 3 tsp of sugar and 1/8 tsp stevia.

I found the "tea" was strong enough that I could dilute it equal parts with more water.

Then, I poured about 1/4 cup of the undiulted ginger water into a glass and added mineral water for my own ginger ale.

Just wanted to share this with those of you who like ginger.

That sounds delicious!!! My mouth is watering.

I never know what to do with the rest of the ginger when I buy it for a recipe. This is what I'm going to do from now on.

What a great idea! I've made hot ginger tea many times when I wasn't feeling well, but never thought of making a cold drink with it. Since my favorite local ginger ale won't tell me if it's gluten-free, I'm especially grateful for the idea of making some hot stuff for myself!

      Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

      I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

      Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
