Tommorrow is my anniversary. In my town the only gluten-free place I know of is the outback so I'm going to go there. Those of you who know the menu well, do you have any suggestions? I've never even looked at there menu, plus I heard it wasn't back just yet.

I've enjoyed anything I've had there.

Bonefish Grill

Carrabas

Maggiano's

PF Changs

Cheeseburger in Paradise

All have gluten-free menus. Well, technically, Maggiano's does not, the chef comes to your table and talks with you personally.

Thanks, I know portland has a PF Changs, not sure about the rest though. Theres a chillis only 30 minutes away, which is closer than portland, I thought I heard they had a gluten-free menu???? Ah, I'll just stick to the outback. ;)

CarlaB Enthusiast

Chilis might, I'm not sure.

Happy Anniversary btw ... how many years?

Thank you....We've been together almost ten, married 6. He has something up his sleeve, because he told me to pack, I asked him if we could eat out before we leave :P I used to eat out all the time because I'm really never home. I have only eaten at wendy's so far. I really don't want to eat at wendy's on my anniversary!!!! :D

CarlaB Enthusiast

Congratulations!

Have fun! Has he told you what to pack? That may give you a clue!

I know what you mean about never being home. I'm actually home all the time now, but a couple months ago we lived out in the country and I spent most of my day in town where there are people! I found I was driving home 15 minutes, just to eat, then going back into town.

Outback is wonderful, but you may want to ask them to rinse your cup out before filling it. I have found bread crumbs in my cup many times and had to send it back. I have also gotten sick from not noticing the bread crumbs until it's too late. I personally like the mad max burger w/ a side of steamed broccoli. It has so much flavor, I personally think it's better than their steaks. If you want to go all out (and you like steak), go for the Victoria Filet. It is really good. Their chicken dishes are good, but not as good as their red meat. IF YOU LIKE DESSERT, MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CHOCOLATE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER!!! It's a flourless brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, it is to die for. Also, the gluten free shrimp appetizer is really good. ENJOY!

Congrats on the Anniversary!!!

I work at Outback, so I literally know the menu inside and out.

Do you like steak, chicken, fish, seafood....?

And of course you HAVE to get dessert - the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under if you're a chocoholic, or the Syndney's Sinful Sundae if you love coconut... mmmm, just order them both!

Can you tell that I sell the most desserts at out Outback haha :lol:

Edit: PS- just saw my reply and noticed that in my photo, I am indeed enjoying an Outback Sydney's Sundae! How appropriate for this post!

Here's my suggestions from each section of the menu:

Appetizer:

Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie (no garlic toast)

Salad:

Queensland Salad (no croutons and don't choose the Mustard Vinagraitte dressing)

House salad -soooo yummy- once again, no croutons

Chicken:

Chicken on the Barbie (if you get the veggies...make sure you tell them no butter - the seasoning in the butter has gluten)

Alice Springs Chicken - has honey mustard, cheese, mushrooms and bacon on it. Very good!

Fish:

Salmon!! SO GOOD! (One of my favorites) Same rule goes for the veggies/broccoli - no butter!

Steak:

Victoria's Center Cut Filet - hands down the most tender steak! Melts in your mouth! (pretty pricey for the size... but well worth the cost!)

Dessert:

Of course, the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under! (No modifications necessary.)

Guest ~jules~

ok, I'm sold on the thunder down under! You don't have to tell me twice about chocolate, especially in a brownie form!!! I'll just have to see what I'm in the mood for when we go, more than likely though I will want steak. Thanks for the suggestions....julie :D

So no butter on the veggies, k, now I'm sure it depends on the server and the particular outback I go to, I am just worried that I'm going to be sending things back left and right, even though I asked in the first place, that could make for a long night, and I used to wait tables I don't want to run the poor girl or boy to death!!! Ah we'll just see what happens, I'll let you all know how my first outback experience goes, my fingers are crossed.... :D

As far as steaks - the Victoria's Filet is probably the most tender cut, and is very popular. If you like sirloins, the Outback Special sells well, and if you like Prime Rib, just make sure you don't get Au Jus! Also make sure that with your salad, you not only request "no croutons" but also ask that it be mixed in a CLEAN bowl, and that the server mark the ticket "Gluten-Free". You have lots of yummy sides to choose from - veggies or broccoli as you know, ask for no butter/seasoning (or ask for plain butter), and I'm in love with the roasted garlic mashed potatoes. The sweet potato w/honey butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon is yum yum too.

Yes! I love that I am now crowned the Dessert Goddess!!!

Like I said, make sure your server marks the ticket GLUTEN-FREE! I know that at the Outback where I work, that is the key to having your food handled properly - clean gloves, etc.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Don't worry about your food. Chances are you won't have to send anything back. Just read the ordering directions carefully in the menu and you'll be fine. We go there quite frequently and we've never had to send anything back other than a salad or a drink mug. I don't get salads anymore there now that the blue cheese dressing isn't considered gluten free. Plus, the bowls always look dirty. I would ask them to rinse off the salad/dessert bowl before preparing. However, I'm one of those people that figures better safe than sorry. I'd rather be a little bit more of a pain and then leave a much bigger tip.

And I can say, as a server, I would prefer that you do that as well! ;)

First off I'll say happy anniversary!!!

Next, I'm going to say this, because like I've said before...I wish someone would have said this to me just after I was first diagnosed....I would not eat out, period so soon after being diagnosed. I know you've only been diagnosed for a month and you're just beginning the healing process so getting glutenized now could be a bad setback.

I know, I know, now all you guys who eat out all the time will probably say to dear Jules "Don't listen to LL04, go out have fun and treat yourself". I'm just here to say, that this is my own advice to her and my own opinion and I would feel awful if she came back from her getaway only remembering that she got sick as a dog and not one single person said anything about the chance she would be taking by eating out.

I really DO hope you have a great time and I really DO hope you don't get ill from someone's stupid, careless mistake. :)

Hello @Midwesteaglesfan and welcome. A result greater than 10 U/mL is considered positive. Some labs use 15 as the cutoff, but 34 is in the positive.  The endoscopy and biopsy is looking for damage to your small intestine.  I don't don't think 5 days is enough to repair the damage. This comment is effectly your answer, regardless of your biopsy results.  The endoscopy has been the Gold Standard diagnostic, and most healthcare providers won't diagnose celiac disease until your intestinal lining Marsh Score reaches stage 3. You don't really want to wait for the damage to get worse, especially since only five days mostly gluten free gave you relief.  Yes, migranes is one of the 200 symptoms that may be caused by Celiac Disease. Malabsorption Syndrome is often comorbid with celiac disease.  The western diet is deficient in many vitamins and minerals.  That's why gluten processed foods are fortified.  Gluten free processed foods are not; Vitamin D deficiency is a virtual given.  40 to 60% of the industrial population is deficient in vitamin D, Damage to the intestinal lining from celiac disease can decrease the number of vitamin D receptors.  So now you get no vitamin D from the sun (skin cancer scare) the major source of vitamin D, plus absorbtion from food is poor because of intestinal damage.   Low iodine intake is getting more of a concern because the major source of iodine used to be bread (dough conditioner with iodine was stopped in the US in the 1970s), dairy (lactose intolerance from eating quick pickles with vinegar instead of fermented pickles which supply lactase excreting lactobacillus to improve Lactose intolerance. Commercial Dairies have wheat, barley and rye added to the cow feed. Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein causing the problem.  And people use less iodized salt.  In the US intake of iodine dropped 50% from 1970 to 1984. Switch to Grass fed only milk and consider supplementing Liquid Iodine drops to your diet.  The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of commercial milk is 5:1; Organic milk is 3:1 and grass fed milk is 1:1. The typical western diet is around 14:1, optimum for humans is 1:1.  Wheat flour is 22:1 omega 6:3.  Choose vegetables lower in omega 6, it is inflammatory.                               Eat fermented foods and switch to Grass fed only milk.  Some say they are sensitive to milk protein, but it is the gluten added to supplement the cow feed to increase milk production that becomes part of the milk protein.

At 41 years old I have been fighting fatigue and joint pain for a couple months.  My family doctor kept saying nothing was wrong but I was insistent that I just didn’t feel right.  Finally after running several blood labs, one came back showing inflammation in my body and I was referred to a rheumatologist.  He was extremely thorough and sat with me and my family for a good hour asking questions and listening. He ordered X-rays of all my joints and more bloodwork.  He suspected some sort of reactive inflammatory arthritis.  My TTG (Tissue Transglutaminase) came back at 34. he told me to try going gluten free and out me on Salfasalzin to help the join inflammation.  Over the next couple days going gluten free and doing a lot of research and talking to people with celiacs,  we found that I should have an upper endoscopy for insurance purposes in the future.  I reached back out to my rheumatologist and expressed this concern and he got back to me stating I was correct and resume regular gluten diet and stop the medication until after that scope.     They were able to schedule me in for 2 days later.  I had been gluten free, or as close to it as I could be for about 5 days.  I know I ate some brats with it but wanted to use them up.  My symptoms had gotten slightly better in those 5 days.  I felt less fatigue and joint pain was slightly better(it had gotten really bad) so for these last 2 days I’ve gone crazy with wheat bread, pasta and such.  I’m hoping those 5 days didn’t screw this endoscopy up.  I can’t imagine after a life of gluten, my intestines healed in 5 days and after eating gluten again for these couple days,  my stomach hurts, joint pain is coming back up so I know the inflammation is there.   Hinesight after this diagnosis, I have had chronic migraines since my late teens.  Has that been a lingering symptom of celiacs all these years?  I’ve never really had the stomach issues, for me it came in heavy these last couple months as the fatigue, just always feeling tired and exhausted.  And the joint pain.     So getting in the car for the 2 hour drive to the hospital for this scope now.     Wish me luck!

To play it safe, use Vasoline Lip Therapy. No questions as to it containing gluten.

jmartes, Thank you for sharing  more information with us. Most of us Celiacs whose problems do not clear up with in a few years have to decide what to do next. We can keep seeing DR.s and hope that we will get some  medication or advice that will improve our health. Or we can go looking for other ways to improve our health. Usually Celiac Disease is not a killer disease, it is a disabling disease as  you have found out. You have time to find some ways to help you recover. Stay on your gluten-free diet and be more careful in avoiding cross contamination . KnittyKitty  and others here can give you advice about avoiding some foods that can give you the gluten auto immune reaction and advice about vitamins and supplement that help celiacs. You may need to take higher doses of Vit. B12  and D3.  About 20 years before a Dr. suggested I might have Celiac disease I had health problems that all other Dr said they could not identify or treat. I was very opposed to alternative providers and treatments. So many people were getting help from a local healer I decided to try that out. It was a little helpful but then, because I had a good education in medical laboraties she gave me a book  to read and what did I think. With great skeptism I started reading and before I was half way through it I began using the methods outlined in the book. Using those herbs and supplements I went from hardly able to work to being able to work almost fulltime. I still use that program. But because I had undiagnosed celiac disease by 10 years later some  of my problems returned and I started to loose weight.    So how does a person find a program that will benefit them? Among the programs you can find online there are many that are snake oil scams and some that will be beneficial. by asking around, as I did. Is there an ND in your area? Do they reccomend that person? If you would like to read about the program I use go to www.drclark.net

It's unfortunate that they won't work with you on this, but in the end sometimes we have to take charge of our own health--which is exactly what happened to me. I did finally get the tests done, but only after years of going down various rabbit holes and suffering. Just quitting gluten may be the best path for you at this point.
