What Is Wrong With Me?

I had posted about Monday night, how I ate out and either had food poisoning or gluten. Well tonight it happened again, but I made dinner at home and I thought all the ingredients were gluten-free. As soon as the meal was over, the nausea hit and this time I threw up. I have vomited twice--no bm yet. I made a "sauce" out of yogurt and mayo, with some spices. I used Vanilla flavored Stoneyfield yogurt and Kraft mayo. I used one Spice Island spice and then a Mccormick spice. I used coconut oil and chicken and avodado and rice. Am I missing something? Is one of these not gluten-free? Maybe I have a virus? But I have felt ok Tue and today until dinner time. If this is what is going to happen to me from gluten then I am in BIG trouble! Vomiting was not a part of my symptoms pre-diagnosis, and not even when I was contaminated before and I knew it. Do many others have nausea and vomiting after gluten? I always expected diarrhea and cramps and pain and bloating and gas. I am a bit worried about this. Any advice is much appreciated.

Karina,

Nausea/vomiting are my symptoms. I'm not sure, but is there any chance your foods were cross-contaminated in some way? I'm betting that you're careful, but it's just a thought.

What happened to be before I was diagnosed was that I'd be fine for a week or two, but then the Gluten build up in my system was so strong that my vomiting was reinduced.

You mentioned feeling nauseated after meals and I can relate to that. There were even days that I couldn't get through a meal without vomiting--and every item that I ate contained Gluten.

Since celiac3270 has gotten me in the mindset, do you toast your gluten-free bread in the same toaster that regular bread is toasted? I don't know how sensitive you are to Gluten, but even a small amount can damage the intestinal wall--my GI told me that as well.

I hope you find the cause, and that all is well with you.

Oh, something else I just remembered--have you checked your cosmetics and toiletries? (Especially shampoo/conditioner) Sometimes those can perpetuate symptoms (if you swallow lotion, for example).

Every expert who has spoken on gluten absoprtion through the skin agrees -- gluten molecules are too large to be absorbed. You can get topical stuff in your mouth by accident, but you do NOT absorb gluten through your skin.

I agree you should look for contamination possibilities. For instance, had the mayo been used for a gluten dish or sandwich, which would have transferred crumbs?

Is there a possible allergy to something else?

good luck

Lovegrov--

Sorry about the misinformation about skin absorption. A doctor actually told me that.

Well the mayo was brand new, never been used. I called the yogurt co. and they said that all the grain alcohol is burned off in the processing and so IF there were any gluten it would have been airborne and not measurable. I am wondering about the Spice Island spice I used and they do not have a ph # to call. I do think it is possible this is a virus. I have eaten a bit today, actually woke up hungry despite still feeling a bit crampy and a bit painful in the abdomen area. The only other thing I can think of is that there was a lot of dairy in my meal, with the ygurt and mayo and all and maybe it was just too much, although I have been able to eat a bowl of ice cream with no problem as well as milk in my cereal, etc.

I am hoping this is a virus--it will go away.

I read that the only Stoneyfield yogurt we can have is their plain yogurt. Perhaps the vanilla yogurt caused the reaction? Also, was the mayo light? I had a reaction to Kraft light mayo. Could you be pregnant? Or maybe you have a stomach virus.

I hope you feel better soon!

I'm not sure that I agree with that statement. It may have been the yogurt or the Spice Islands spice. If it was a seasoning mixture and not just a plain spice, then it has a higher probability of containing gluten. I try to stick with McCormick single spices and gluten free spice mixtures sold at specialty stores. Just not worth getting sick over.

But I also did not have vomiting as one of my symptoms and about two weeks ago I was vomiting one night, nausea the next day, fine the next day, diarrhea and nausea, then throwing up again with the nausea and diarrhea coming and going a few more days. It ended up being a stomach virus that was going around town, but the sypmtoms were not steady and it lasted a full week. I was wiped out and it took a while to start feeling normal again. I had not tried any new foods and I had not eaten out, so I know I did not get any gluten (or dairy, which causes me a wealth of symptoms as well!).

I hope you are feeling better.

God bless,

Mariann

Yes, I am still suspicious of the yogurt. On a previous call to Stoneyfield, I was told the only one that was for sure safe was the plain as well. As for the spices--I am the same in that I only use Mccormick ones because I know they are safe, but in this instance, I had this other spice that was just a single spice from another co (Spice Island) and of course I had bought it "pre-Celiac". My hubby wondered about the pregancy possibility as well... that would be really funny (well maybe not REALLY) because the other two times I have been pregnant I was convinced I just had a virus--I really didn't believe I could be preggo either time!

Well, I think it was a virus, and I am feeling much better now. Thanks so much for all the responses--and I DO need to think twice before eating that vanilla yogurt again, or using that spice. ;)

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition with a genetic base. The the potential for developing the disease is inherited. but remains latent until triggered by some stress event. Thus, there is an epigenetic component to celiac disease. Once the genes are awakened from dormancy, celiac reactions are triggered by the ingestion of gluten.

Hi all, just ticked over into my first year gluten-free after being diagnosed last October and feeling a bit rough after a possible glutening. Diagnosed at the ripe age of 38, never been ill in my life before this so safe to say my health anxiety is now borderline unmanageable. I think I may have been glutened a week ago, since then I’ve had that familiar hot/burning feeling in my gut, gas, bloating and all the Bristol Stool chart types in one sitting. I know people are different but does this sound familiar to anyone? Stomach was churning like mad last weekend like it did when I first ill before diagnosis. Acid reflux(which was my first symptom way back when) also reared its ugly head, which I probably the worst symptoms imo. Anxiety is probably up more so as I’m leaving on holiday to USA in 3 weeks time, which would be pretty much ruined if my guts are still messed by the time we leave.  Any words of wisdom appreciated    Bryan

This doesn't answer your question but I'm not sure if you know that this intolerance is passed down from mother to child through Cord blood and or breast milk.

I’m having this type of MRI this afternoon,  What specifically do you want to know?  From what I’ve read, not all facilities use the same drink prep.

Hi I've been told I need a MRI on my bowels , I was booked for a colonoscopy, but because of my sever back issues and trapped nerve it can't be done , the nurse told me I will have to have a manitol drink a hour before the scan , I'm just a bit worried has I have issues with sweeteners like even a little,  I get a weird throat and ears and I've read it is a similar substance , not sure if anyone has had one of these scans or could give me some advise on the drink prep thanks in advance 😄
