Need Feedback On Reactions To Gluten

 On Sept. 24 I went to the church picnic, and ate from the pot luck buffet for the 1st time

since my dx 15 months ago. It was a big mistake, even tho' I chose my foods very carefully

(I thought). I have had several gluten incidents over the past 15 months, but nothing severe,

so that made me confident that I wouldn't get sick even if I got some gluten.

The next day, I knew I had eaten gluten. Then each day I developed symptoms I had never

experienced before, but were consistent with what I've read from others on the forum.

In my case, I don't get the Big D. Mine is the Big C, which gets worse if I eat gluten.

The thing that puzzled me was that I developed a fever of 101.8 on the 3rd day (Ibuprofen took it away). The next evening my temp went to 99.2 (Ibuprofen to the rescue again). No more fever after that.

I hadn't heard of fever connected with a gluten incident. Yesterday, I developed a blood blister

on my tongue (??!!) and wondered if it was from poisons in my system, or perhaps I bit my tongue

without realizing it.

After all other symptoms subsided (still have the brain fog), I'm left feeling weak and washed out.

It feels a lot like low blood sugar which I get occasionally, only it doesn't go away when I eat

(O.J. usually brings the blood sugar back to normal for me)

Since I've never before experienced such a severe reaction, I'm left wondering if perhaps there was

also something else going on in my body at the same time (a little virus or bacteria). And I

am interested in having some feedback on this.

I can tell you this much. I will never again eat from a pot luck buffet! I learned my lesson.

I'm happy to report that I'm feeling ever so much better :D except for the weakness.

Regards,

Maryellen

My guess is that along with the gluten you also got a bug from the potluck. Consider it a double whammy! I no longer take my chances even with something that is naturally gluten-free (like fruit). I never know if the surface they cut the fruit on had bread crumbs on it (yes, I am that sensitive). Hope you feel better soon!

:o Hez, what a cute avatar!

I never thought about fruit etc. being a problem, but what you point out is very enlightening.

Thanks,

Maryellen

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
