I Need Help With Menu Selection

I am hosting a luncheon at a restaurant in a couple weeks, and need help selecting something to eat thats safe

(i know it won't be safe, but somewhat) . I am including a link to the menu. The -only- thing i am picking out as gluten free is the salad- i can sneak my own dressing in my purse to use. What else stands out as possibly safe? I will confirm with the manager if something is gluten-free or not before hand but wanted some choices...

i know the lunch menu is for sure available- and think the Brunch will be possibly as well.

-Thanks in advance-

Breann

wow reading that makes me hungry.. LOL.. I personally would call and talk to the chef about different choices. A lot of chefs will make stuff gluten free for you that might not normally be. It doesnt hurt to ask. You just need to explain in depth how to make things gluten free and be safe about it.

I hope that helps.. good luck

I'm really glad you posted, because I'm going to N.O. in Dec.!

The scariest looking items would be fried, pasta, bleu cheese, soup, sauteed mushrooms, and blackened fish.

I think the safest items would be grilled fish, chicken, or steak. That shrimp with grit cakes looked good, but I'm doubtful on the andouille sausage. You'd have to ask to make sure about any additional ingredients in the grit cakes as well.

For side items, I've had red beans and rice successfully. YUM!

You've got me excited for my first trip to the BIG EASY! Have a WONDERFUL lunch!

I am very leary about eating in restaurants and here is what I would do.

Definitely NOT a salad. For some reason I always get sick from salads. I don't know if it is the croutons nearby or the bread nearby but I have always gotten sick from salads.

I wouldn't order off the menu. I would ask for something plain that can be cooked in its own dish. Such as baked salmon or baked chicken. I always ask for steamed veggies and ask for half of them when the other people get their salads or appetizers and the other half with my meal. It they have rice that is cooked in a 'rice only" area, then I would get that as well. I end up with plain food that I have to season with salt and pepper but I don't usually get sick.

I always talk to the chef no matter what the server or manager says. I look the person in the eye and let him know that I'm trusting him with my health. Most of them are very nice and I always thank them many times and try to be very respectful. The biggest thing to explain is the cc risk, some people don't get that and that is the point I try to drill home.

Have fun.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
