I searched this but "corn" kept coming up  ......

I need some help w/ Vanilla Extract. Is pure and imitation BOTH safe or what? Is it just certain kinds that are safe?? Yep, i'm confused about this!

I have a thing of Great Value PURE vanilla extract and I have a thing of McCormick's IMITATION vanilla extract. Just curious is I can use both, one and not the other or neither of them.

Thanks in advanced to anyone out there with MEGA baking knowledge!

Hey Chick:

McCormack's is gluten free, it is vanillin (synthetic vanilla). Real vanilla extract has acohol in it.

Okay, thanks!

So does anyone know if Great Value Brand Pure Vanilla Extract is safe???

I'll keep searching on this as well but feel free to beat me to it. HAHA!

All products by Nielesn-Massey Vanillas Open Original Shared Link are gluten free!

I am able to get them at my gourmet grocery store. And a few other places in town!

Okay, thanks!

All vanilla would appear to be gluten-free. Distilled alcohol is gluten-free, and even it werent, the amount used in extract is so small, you couldn't even measure it.

Vanilla being a problem is another one of those celiac urban myths.

Richard, You are our favorite "celiac myth-buster." As always thanks for giving us the facts!

Now that we' re on this topic, would that also be the same answer for McCormick's other extracts, like the lemon, anise, etc.

Turtle Enthusiast

Thanks everyone!

Time to get cookin' :D

I think people freaked out about vanilla because of the "Bourbon" in the name.... not realizing that it was the name of a place and not that of the drink!

Thanks everyone!

That's verified by info I have from Columbia University Celiac Center. Their literature lists all extracts as safe.

I called McCormacks and they said that all of their extracts are gluten-free. THey will note on the package if it isn't.

Thanks rmj when I first rang up it was we can't do it without , but I talked to a lovely lady and she sorted it all out for me, so it pays to be persistent , I would have had to decline if I hadn't been given the water option too , so yes I'm glad too 😌

I’m so glad they listened to your concerns!  I hope you get some answers from the MRI.

Had my MRI today I didn't have to have the manitol with my allergy's , I just had a litre of water , they were great with my concerns , so let's see if anything comes of if will keep posted once I have results 👍

Thank you ,it’s been a long road for me for having both now ,what upsets the most is that if they discovered that I also have cealiac earlier I would not have injested gluten if I was aware. Double whammy.
