Can anyone recommend a pediatrician or pediatric gastroenterologist? I want to make an appointment to take my 7 year old for testing. It doesn't matter how far I have to travel; I just want someone who doesn't think I'm nuts for suspecting celiac in my autistic son. :unsure:

A couple of ideas, here. 1 - Contact a local support group for celiac (if you have one), and people in the group will probably have some feedback. 2 - make a few phone calls. Try to talk to the doctor if you can, to see how familiar he/she is with celiac. 3 - In the Tampa area, I took my daughter to Dr. Michele Weinsett, a pediatric gastrointerologis. She has treated numerous children with Celiac, and we were very please with her professionalism. The child we took to her tested negative, as it turned out (although we did already have one child diagnosed by her pediatrician). Dr. Weinsett's response was encouraging, not condescending (which we have experienced elsewhere).

Do not tolerate a doctor that treats you as though you are "nuts". You are a concerned parent trying to help your child. I really hope you are able to find someone that you feel comfortable with close to home. Good luck.

You did not mention where you live. I know you said you are willing to travel but if you live on the West Coast I am sure you won't be traveling to Jersey :P . If you are around Jersey the gastro. doctors at the Goryeb Children's Hospital at Morristion Hosptial are very good and very experienced with Celiac. Sorry if that is not much help.

Yinka Davies, MD is a pediatric gastroenterologist. She's very nice, friendly, helpful and encouraging. I took my daughter to her after being gluten-free based on Enterolab tests. She fully supported our doing that and didn't push for a biopsy. All she asked us to do is do a blood panel once a year, and keep doing the gluten-free diet.

She has offices in Sacramento and Roseville, CA. Part of the Sutter Medical Group, I believe.

Dr. Fasano at the University of Maryland in Baltimore is a leading researcher and pediatric celiac specialist. We have not seen him as we have a few closer to where I live, but he runs a research center in Baltimore strictly for celiac patients. Let me know if you need more info. Good Luck, it can be a tough search.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

      Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.
