I incurred almost $1000 in out of pocket bills from a emergency room visit, and I was reading about the gluten-free food being claimable on the taxes, can I claim these medical bills as well?

always talk to a tax preparer on questions of a more complicated nature like this, but you may be able to deduct medical expenses IF they sum to being more than 7.5% of your AGI (adjusted gross income).*

*this is for the US tax system. I don't know about Canada.

In Canada you can claim all medical bills. However, it depends on your income just how much you'll get back. In most cases it will reduce the amount of income tax you have to pay.

Also in Canada, if you have to travel any distance to see a doctor you can deduct travel expenses. It's so much per kilometer. You just go to your doctor's office and get a print out of all your visits.

In Canada, you can make a claim on line 330 for a medical expense deduction IF the amount exceeds 3% of your net income (line 236), or $1884, whichever is LESS. In Canada, most emergency room services are paid for by the provincial government-run insurance plan, and are not an eligible expense for tax purposes (you CAN claim costs for wheelchairs, crutches, artificial limbs, and other things not covered by public insurance). Travel costs (including ambulance service) qualify as a medical expense.

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?
