Gluten Free In Nyc

Hi there,

I am planning a trip to New York City with my family and I am the only one who is gluten free, they don't really understand it. I would like to be as prepared as possible with restaurant suggestions, stores, etc. before I go there. Does anyone have any good recommendations for gluten free dining in New York City. We will be staying near Times Square. Any suggestions would be very welcome and appreciated!

There are tons of good gluten-free places in New York City. Risotteria is my favourite.

Yes, you MUST go to Risotteria. Also, if you are looking for something a little nicer, check out Lumi, it is amazing...Depending how long you will be here, if you need to stock up on some snacks, check out Westerly on 54th/8th - they have the best prices and selection of gluten free foods in your area. Also, you can always go to Whole Foods - either the one in Columbus Circle or the one in Chelsea - they are about equidistant from Times Square. Also, Vintage (51st/9th) was serving gluten free beer last time i went there, so you should check that out if you drink. Any other questions, feel free to ask - NYC is a gluten-free haven! :D

Like Mookie said, Risotteria and Lumi are musts!! I went to Bistango not long ago which was also excellent. It's a tiny place though and gets pretty busy for dinner so either make a reservation or maybe try it for lunch.

I just read today that Blue Smoke now has a gluten-free menu; which is awesome!!

In Times Square, there is a restaurant on 44th b/t Broadway & 6th Avenue called Osteria al Doge. They don't have a gluten free menu, but they have an incredible seafood risotto.

I've also heard that Ruby Foo's in Times Square has a gluten free menu or is accomodating.

There is a little Belgium restaurant on 43rd b/t 6th & Broadway called BXL. They have a pretty good burgers that you can order without a bun, omlettes, mussels, etc. It's across the street from my office so I eat here pretty often and they have never glutened me. So although it's not like the food is amazing, but it's good food and great for a decent lunch.

Bistango gets my vote the food is great and they are so nice there. I can't have it now because of candida issues but they even have these choclate biscotti for desert that is amazing

HI -- we just returned from a weekend in NY last night. Ruby Foo's in Times Sq has a gluten free menu and the waiter was very helpful. I carried my own packets of gluten free soy sauce to use on the fried rice, so I didn't ask if they had any. My daughter and I shared an order of chicken fried rice and a fabulous salmon dish and still had food to take back to our condo!!! We also tried Blue Smoke - and my non celiac husband LOVED it!!! I had the brisket and mashed potatoes because it was so cold and this sounded like a great winter dish and it was!!!! It was a fun place with a hopping bar and they even had Redbridge beer to go with the ribs and brisket!! I would highly recommend it if you are traveling with gluten eaters. It is at 27th and Lexington - you can walk it if it isn't bitter cold. There is a cute bar across the street called Vig 27. Bistango is always great for Italian. Risotteria is cute and fun if you are down in the village - on Bleeker street but far from Times Sq. Have a GREAT TIME!!!

I also love Tini's - its like Lumi but has a great martini menu. For any of you that haven't tried it - its an upscale italian place on the Upper East Side.

Sambuca - on the Upper West Side is also gluten free. Its more of a family style italian...but I've enjoyed it.

Also, I've heard the ethiopian place downtown Ghenet is great! You have to call 24 hrs in advance so they can make their dosai gluten free for you...I'm dying to try it.

Has anyone mentioned Candle Cafe? I have heard about it, but haven't been back to NYC to try it out. I just might have to move to New York. There are a bunch of gluten-free bakeries there too:)

Although it's more of a coffee shop/bakery, I absolutely LOVE Open Original Shared Link.

The only thing they have are "Paolitos", as well as some cookies for dessert, but by gum, they are delicious.

Great Pizza place in times square area near the shows. Nizza Pizza has an extensive gluten free menu.

      @catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten.       I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

      good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

      I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

      What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
