I couldnt imagine being able to safely eat my favorite childhood cereal fruity pebbles lol and it be ok. Are people sure this is ok lol? really sounds to good to be true and a hersheys bar? I thought my diet would be the end of the world. and omg sugar in my coffee? no way! I mean this is a joke right, as you can tell Im a sweet person for the most part:) I just want someone to type yes this stuff is ok before I make the mistake of devouring this stuff! I looked at the ingredients and dont see anything wrong but Im only on day 3 of this diet and only grabbed the things I saw labeled gluten free, amy's and gluten-free pantry etc. please Pinch me!

First off Welcome, you have come to a place with a lot of nice knowledgeable folks. Feel free to ask any questions you need to.

I don't eat Pebbles but one way I found to get the info is to type the item and gluten into the search bar on google. Many times the companies link will come up and it saves a lot of time over just trying to find the info on the companies web site. There also should be a phone number on the box of a lot of stuff you buy and usually they can give you the info.

If by sugar for your coffee is sugar it is fine, be careful with artificial sweeters and sugar alcohols although gluten-free they are hard to tolerate for many. CoffeeMate Creamers are also gluten-free and they even mark them as such, I couldn't live without my french vanilla.

I have never had an issue with Hersey's chocolate bars, just chocolate but that does not mean you should take my word for it.

Gluten free Pantry is great, if you got their bread mixes they have a very different consistency than gluten bread doughs so don't think you did something wrong when they seem 'loose'. The French Bread Pizza Recipe is the best I have found, I usually only put in 3/4 of the water called for to make it easier to spread and spread with oiled baggies over your hands.

You need to get in the habit of calling and checking everything you use. We do have different levels of sensitivity here and some have issues with cross contamination more than others. You won't know how much of an issue CC is for you until you have been gluten-free for a bit and had a chance to heal.

You should also be checking your shampoos and stuff like that for gluten containing ingredients. Many cosmetics are not safe so be sure to check. Make sure you get a new toaster and if you have wooden utensils replace them.

And if your significant other is a beer drinker or gluten eater be sure he/she brushes their teeth before a kiss

You have come to good place for info and be sure to check out other sites also. The celiac sprue association has a good guide to beginning the diet, it's the clearest I have found so you may want to check them out also.

yeah the whole kissing thing lol. I was afraid to let him kiss me last night, especially after those flour tortillas he likes soooo much:) go figure! As for the toaster oven I have, is it possible to clean that since it was only really used for toast and use that and buy a reguilar toaster for the family? or would I be taking a risk? wooden utensils yeah didnt think of that thanks, not to mention they are kept in the same drawer as the others so I know now I need to rewash then and clean the drawer! I have looked up all my cosmetics and shampoos, changed those or found some with the least ingredients and to my surprise I think I did it right bc I am not itching at all and I do have dermatitis herpetiformis so I get a bozo button lol. I think my biggest issue is going to be spices since those are the most Im unsure about, I dont need sugar substitutes so sugar would probably be the way to go with me since i have a hard time remembering "details". Spices though thats a confusing one! I still have yet to conquer that amongst many other things. I have to thankyou for being so friendly, its not often you get a nice reply rather than people thinking your an idiot for not doing your research Im trying like heck but it is getting overwhelming. Im sure everyone started clueless as well but some people have a better nack for researching, I usually do well but this is proving challenging as you can imagine!

Here's the most recent post discussing fruity pebbles. Open Original Shared Link

I think the general consensus is that they're gluten free, but there's always an issue for cross contamination if the factory isn't dedicated gluten free. Many people eat them without problems though.

i think i may have to take my chances, fruity pebbles are quite a temptation, but Ill wait a little bit so I can tell better if I have a reaction. thanks!

Found this at the Glutenfreekitchen site regarding spices:

Spices and Extracts - sometimes wheat flour is used in spices to prevent clumping.

McCormick spices are gluten free. Extract often have alcohol

that is gluten based, McCormick extracts are gluten free. Beware

when purchasing spice mixes or sauces they can contain gluten.

Ex: some of McCormick's foil wrapped mixes are not gluten free,

such as the gravy, and spaghetti mix. The Taco mix is gluten free.

That particular one is okay so you lucked out. I also go with the McCormick spices. Do make sure you change that toaster though and tuck it away or cover so gluten eaters do not accidentally use it. It is a pain but it is needed there is no way to get all the crumbs out. Also make sure you have all your own condiments and your own stick or tub of butter, peanut butter, jelly etc.

I have eaten them for years without any reaction at all and I consider myself to be highly reactive to gluten.

the taco mix I used was in a box set , it was ummmm something eatin, wasnt mccormick unfortunately but I know better now. Already bought butter ect, a new toaster oven yeah lol I kinda figured it was impossible to do that.

Cant wait to have my pebbles lol!

The only thing I know that is going to be a real struggle is family, the ones who dont live with me but visit thier house often, they are going to look at me ridiculously and be critics of my careful cleaniness, for some reason they think a positive blood test proves nothing and I dont need to be on this diet though my doctors say otherwise. I think perhaps they dont realize the extent of the situation and that bothers me......I dont want to sound rude but how do I educate know it alls and pessimists? lol

That's really hard. In my family what got everyone over their doubts was my return to reasonably good health and remaining that way. The difference in our medical bills alone was astounding and that made my DH realize that it wasn't bunk. The difference was less obvious for the others because they had not been anywhere near as sick as I was but after testing and a short time gluten-free the rest of the family realized how much they thought was 'normal' that really wasn't. There is a real good chance that others in your family need to be gluten-free also so make sure they get tested.

amarieski Apprentice

Raven I got you there, I did tell my mother, siblings to get tested and will be getting my daughter tested. Unfortunately, my mother I know will never go gluten free even if she was diagnosed, I have a feeling very strong that she does have celiac disease and my brother also. Alot of complaining about the things Ive felt, but my mother thinks of being diagnosed with a disease is a way to get pity, she already been diagnosed with other things and yet will not do what her doctors tell her, that is a hopeless situation so Im trying to just worry about myself but cant help worry about my family. My sister has ms and says she feels fine after she eats but doesnt realize you can feel "fine" or "without symptoms" even with celiac disease, and considering she already has ms another auto immune, I think its just being safe and wanting to be around longer to watch your family grow. My brother will get tested Im sure hes always feeling sick and debilitated missed work and so on. I try like heck to get them to care ...........sigh lol

Is there a digestive enzyme that helps build a healthier gut? I see people taking them but not sure what really works
    • trents
So the tTG-IGA at 28 is positive for celiac disease. There are some other medical conditions that can cause elevated tTG-IGA but this is unlikely. There are some people for whom the dairy protein casein can cause this but by far the most likely cause is celiac disease. Especially when your small bowel lining is "scalloped". Your Serum IGA 01 (aka, "total IGA") at 245 mg/dl is within normal range, indicating you are not IGA deficient. But I also think it would be wise to take your doctor's advice about the sucraid diet and avoiding dairy . . . at least until you experience healing and your gut has had a chance to heal, which can take around two years. After that, you can experiment with adding dairy back in and monitor symptoms. By the way, if you want the protein afforded by dairy but need to avoid casein, you can do so with whey protein powder. Whey is the other major protein in dairy.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.
