Hi!

I am in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and would welcome a support group. I have been diagnosed for six years and have been alone all of this time. I have had so many health problems as a result of this disease. I was sick over 10 years before my diagnosis. I feel much better now but would welcome talking to someone in person with the same disease.

Hi Steffie,

I have heard through my Church of a couple of people with Celiac and their friends told me they may be interested in a support group. Someone on this forum told me that there Whole food store lets them meet at the store. I think that would be cool. I am also willing to drive to t-town and have dinner somewhere to meet there also. I am sorry that you went so long alone. My husband has had symtoms for a long time but i never had heard of Celiac until i took my daughter to the doctor and found out a week later after she had a biopsy. We have only been gluten free since November so I am still overwhelmed trying to learn. I think it would do my daughter good to meet someone else with celiac because i think she gets depressed some time. Feel free to email me of group so we can chat.

Hi, my name is Sherry, and I live in Hoover, AL. I'd LOVE to see a Celiac support group started soon! I've been gluten-free for 7 years now, but was sick with what was mis-diagnosed as Crohn's disease at least 10 years prior to that! I am very used to the diet, but now can't "do" dairy or soy anymore without getting sick! Please feel free to contact me about getting a group started!

I am from AL but I don't live there now. But I have a couple of Celiac friends in Birmingham, so when you do get a meeting together, I would love to share the info with them (they are not on celiac.com, I don't think....). Good Luck!!

There is a Celiac support group in Birmingham. Their e-mail is Birminghamceliac.com. If this not right it may be listed as Bham celiac support group. They have monthly meetings. I have been to one and they are having another one on July 30th in Hoover. Let me know if you need more info.

Lorlyn, I still haven't found a Celiac Support Group, although a sign was posted at Organic Harvest last year asking if any of their patrons were interested in starting a group, but nothing seemed to come of it. Have you been to the new Whole Foods store yet? Please let me know if I can be of any help! Sherry

Hey Sherry,

I go to the new Whole Foods a couple times a month to get certain things. They had a sign up for a support group in Birmingham(Hoover). I went to the July meeting and it was nice for our family to meet other people in the same boat as us. I was out of town for the August meeting there will be another one in September. If you would like the info they have a web page at Birmingham Celiac.com I think if you are interested. If you cannot find the info just let me know. Nice to hear from another Alabamian :rolleyes:

Lorlyn and Sherry, I'm glad y'all had this conversation! :)

Am heading off to that Website now because I sure could use some support and advice from other folks in the area. I live in Inverness so the Hoover meeting will be convenient. Not that it would matter. I've never been a support-group kind of girl, but this situation is changing all kinds of things.

Hey Khat, Just wanted to say hello and welcome to this forum. Just to let you know the B'ham(Hoover) group will be meeting at Organic Harvest on September 14 at 6:00 pm. I have been to one meeting and there were about 20-30 people. The one meeting I went to was a get together and everyone brought a dish. It was nice to meet other people with the same problem. The last meeting they had a speaker come in so it seems like it varies. Please try to come.

Hello Gluten Free Friends!

We do indeed have a great support group here in Birmingham, Alabama. The group is still relatively new - just over a year old - but growing all the time! Our next meeting is on October 29th, 6:00 p.m. at Kid One Transport in Hoover (Lorna Road/I459 area - easy to get to).

Everyone is welcome. A pediatrician specializing in children with Celiac is going to be speaking at this meeting.

I personally have found the group to be a great source of information, support, and friendship!

Hello Friends!

I am looking forward to continuing the work with the Birmingham Celiac Disease Support group that Janet started here for all of us. I'm sure all of you felt 'alone' with your ailment as I did, before finding the group that she started. I have enjoyed the friendships that I have made, and greatly appreciate the wealth of knowledge that we have gained thanks to Janet's hard work. Thank you Janet!

I will work to continue to grow our group and our resources, knowing that through larger numbers our voices are better heard spreading the word about Celiac Disease. I'd like to give more people like us who have been previously diagnosed a new support system - and maybe inspire someone not yet diagnosed to ask the right questions of their doctors to save them the long diagnosis process that many of us had.

      Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

      Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

      Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

      Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
