What martinis does everyone drink.... I am used to wines and a potato vodka...but I need something a little different since I always drink vodkas....any good drink ideas... we are going out to dinner tonite..

Flavored martinis are a fun drink. I like cosmpolitans the best ... but be sure to check with the bartender about the mixers. One time I found that a margarita mixer used by a restaurant had wheat in it! I still ask for potato vodka, even in a flavored martini. Chocolate martinis are great, too!

Rum drinks are also fine. Mojitos are popular drinks right now and many restaurants serve them.

You Rock... Thankyou. I quit drinking for years because of course I like beer and bourbons and was always getting sick even from one beer. There was a time I could handle it.. So now im venturing out it is fun!

I really like Jack Daniels myself! They say they're gluten-free, and the distillation process is supposed to remove the gluten.

Some people get sick from distilled liquor, others do not. I wouldn't test it at a restaurant though because you won't know whether the food or the drink glutened you if you do have symptoms afterward.

There is a big debate on here whether the distillation process completely removes gluten and many feel strongly about their position (you will be hearing from gfp now that I've said all this :P ).

After having said all this, I can't drink right now at all! I'll test when I can because I miss JD ... it's been over a year!

I've never been a beer drinker (it's always made me sick, LOL), but hubby likes Redbridge, the new gluten-free beer by Budweiser.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too.  is this everyone’s experience?  Can I drink it?  I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant reactions to gluten so can’t try it to see for myself.

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.

      I will assume you did the gluten challenge properly and were eating a lot of gluten daily for 6-8 weeks before your test, but if not, that could be the issue. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
