Hi all,

Is it possible to sneeze as an immune reaction to ingestion of gluten?

Is it possible to sneeze as an immune reaction to ingestion of gluten?

Maybe so, but I have not seen it listed as one of the symptoms. I feel that I want to sneeze in the flour section in the grocery isle.

One of my daughter's main symptoms pre-diet was nasal congestion. Before we started looking at the gastro issues her pediatrician ran an allergy swab in her nose and said she had a huge allery count (whatever that means) and wanted to put her on nasal steroids, which we never did because the gastro business suddenly come to the forefront.

Once she started the gluten-free diet her nasal congestion has cleared up (ie. she no longer snores like a buzz saw!). When we suspect that she's been glutened the sneezing and snoring comes right back.

So, I think that there can be a correlation - or it could just be allergies, who knows it would be interesting to re-do that nose swab and find out if it is gone?.

About a year ago, before I was diagnosed I made the comment to my naturopathic doc. that it seemed after i ate regular cereal I would have a sneezing fit.....maybe just a coincidence since I also sneeze while reading the newspaper- something about the ink dust or something. The sneezing was never problematic though.

I tend to have sneezing bouts every so often. Next time I get one I'll have to pay closer attention to what may have set it off.

Hi all,

Is it possible to sneeze as an immune reaction to ingestion of gluten?

I know this is an old post, but my son and I were recently diagnosed with celiac. I just googled (sneezing, gluten, celiac) because my son 7 wakes up sneezing 30 times in the mornings. I now notice he doesn't unless we went out to eat and possibly got something with gluten. Yesterday he went to his grandma/pa house and got hungry. So grandma took some breaded chicken breasts peeled it all off, washed the chicken under water, then recoiled it (made me cring when I was told) and again he woke up sneezing. So I want to say YES I believe it could be a possible reaction to gluten.

      @Scott Adams Strange question but can you actually feel your hernia? I have so many abdominal lumps and bumps of longstanding (my GP said it's fat!) that I sometimes wonder if an inguinal hernia could be missed. I am quite sure some of my pain is from my umbilical hernia but that first came about courtesy of my second pregnancy.

      For the Inguinal hernia I could definitely feel it, and it came with an obvious bulge that appeared soon after doing a project where I was drilling holes on concrete using a very old school regular hand drill with mason bit, instead of a hammer drill with mason bit--this left me squatting over the drill putting my weight on it for several hours (the hammer drill would not have required this level of stress, nor the time it took). Bad idea--learn from my mistake in being "lazy" and not renting (or buying) the proper tool for the job. My umbilical hernia was around for many years, and I didn't feel that one at all, so never worried about it. My doctor basically recommended doing both in one surgery, which seemed like wise move.  As far as the possible IBS connection to either, it was definitely apparent after getting the Inguinal hernia, which is why I asked my doctor about that, but after getting both fixed I realize that the umbilical hernia likely also had mild IBS effects over the years.

Recently on the forum someone mentioned the idea of hernia induced IBS, which I now believe was a real for me, but was a fairly minor issue overall, which got worse after getting the more recent Inguinal hernia. My doctor never mentioned this as a possibility, even though I directly asked him about it during my office visit: Me "can my hernias cause any digestive issues?" My doctor: "No, I doubt that." I still need to learn more about hernia induced IBS, but I realize now that I might have been affected by this to some degree in for a while.
