Traveller's D.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board...

I'm a celiac, and I went on holidays for a week to the Dominican. My diet wasn't much different than usual, but at the end I got a really bad case of Traveller's D. Everyone around me had the same thing but it ended up going away after a couple of days. Today is my 6th day with it and it's not getting much better - soo tired and still running to the bathroom a couple times a day. Does anyone know if this could be related to my celiac disease? I'm guessing it probably is. Has anyone experienced this, and/or does anyone have any ideas on how to improve my symptoms? I went to the doctor and I'm still waiting for test results, but I don't think they will tell me much anyway.

Thanks!!

It could be sorta related. Since "traveller's D" is just colonizing your intestine with bacteria that you aren't used to, your gut could be more sensitive to the change.

On the other hand, you could have picked up a different bug than your friends did and it's taking longer to recover from.

I find that it always takes me longer to recover from illnesses. Last March my husband and I both got the stomach flu. He had diarrhea for one day, and was just tired for another day. I vomited for 8 hours straight for one day, and then had diarrhea for another 4, and then general malaise for another week. Same virus, only difference is that I'm Celiac and he's not....

If a Celiac person is successful in following a gluten-free diet, they can go into remission.   They may not have a reaction to gluten without a precipitating event like an injury or infection or even emotional or mental stress.   Following a strict gluten-free diet at home, then indulging in gluten containing products abroad without a reaction can be explained by this remission.

Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.
