Amazing!

Okay, I shouldn't be so amazed, but I was! I had some baked beans at my granddaughter's school, for barbecue day. I knew I shouldn't trust them, and just have the bunless burger and lettuce with my own dressing. But, no, it didn't seem like enough food, so took a small serving. Dumb me! Anyway, I don't seem to have much for symptoms, but this time had some stomach distress, and was sluggish and tired for a few days. I've been probably mostly gluten-free for 4+ months, and had felt better for the most part, while I made some mistakes. But, now that I've gotten the hang of this diet, I made that mistake, and learned something from it. I'd been wondering how I would feel if I had gluten food. Now I know! I am so sorry it wasn't over a chocolate cupcake, real pizza, a whole hamburger, or one of my other favorite foods, rather than baked beans!

Anyone else with a similar stupid story???

Oh, I think we have all made a stupid mistake at some point, especially in the beginning. My stupid thing was with oats. I didn't understand the cross-contamination" issue and I ate a huge bowl of Chocolate Oaties cereal. The box said wheat free so I just figured they are all right. The products I eat should say "wheat free/gluten free." Anyway the cereal tasted delicious but the four days of burning stomach/abdominal pain just wasn't worth it. So now I bought Chocolate Krispies (made out of rice that are wheat free/gluten free) and they taste even better and I feel great when I eat them.

Here's a stupid one for you.....

My son drinks rice milk (Rice Dream - yes, I know it's not gluten-free....neither is he). I drink soy milk. Since I am the only one who drinks the soy milk, I just drink it right out of the jug. Well, Rice Dream and my soy milk look quite a bit a like, and I went to take a swig of soy, and got the wrong jug!! I don't really taste it until I've already swallowed it, so it was too late. Felt yuck for two days over one little swig. And the "funny" thing is.....I've done it twice since going gluten-free!!! What a nerd I am!!!

LOL...see....we're all dingy sometimes.

this might sound kind of dumb but it is easy to do and I didn't think so little would hurt me...

I am Gluten free since Feb-04...I can't handle many of the breads but I have always liked corn pancakes so the gluten-free pancakes are a staple in my house. My wife and son have no problems with gluten and I don't punish them and make them go gluten-free with me although they actually do like the pancakes. Well, while buttering my cakes one day, I must have taken some toast crumbs on the end of the stick with my pancakes...big mistake! I was running every 30 min. for a day and a half and felt sicker than dog!

Lesson learned...have 2 sticks of butter (peanut butter and jelly too)...a gluten-free stick for myself and let the rest of the family have their own.

Take care.

Thanks for your replies! I was sure everyone has done some dumb things, too!

My problem is I may be asympomatic, or very nearly! I would not notice cross-contamination, or crumbs! Or maybe I'm so used to a bit of rumbly tummy, that I don't think anything of it??? It makes it so hard to know if I'm getting cross-contamination!

I'm going on my first cruise in 3 1/2 weeks, since going gluten-free. I hope I do okay! Princess line has said they can help me. I'll have to be careful, on my own, as wouldn't want to get sick on vacation! I'm hoping their ham is gluten-free, as then I can have a fresh made omelet for breakfast, which are always good. Those bunless burgers are becoming my usual, or a salad with my own dressing packets, for lunch out. Dinner should be easier.

Anyone else cruised with celiac disease?

This is really helpful  I had not considered sugar alcohols or inulin as triggers. Thanks for the practical baking tips too color coding and baking G F first makes a lot of sense. Thiamax (TTFD) plus a B-complex, and if you want benfotiamine, the Life Extension formula covers that at ~100 mg.

High fiber can definitely cause sudden GI distress especially if it’s a new addition but accidental gluten exposure can feel similar. Keeping a simple food/symptom log and introducing new gluten-free foods one at a time can really help you spot the pattern. Thanks for asking  I’m mainly looking for gluten-free staples and snacks. Any recommendations for brands or go-to items would be appreciated.

sorry a bit confused so I should take my B complex along with Objective Nutrients Thiamax for TTFD but what about a Benfotiamine to take. The Life extensions contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine together or im confusing myself. I am trying to see if I take Thiamax what should I take for Benfotiamine. Thanks EDITING after further research I see ones water soluble ones fat soluble. So I guess 100MG as you suggested of Life Extension contains Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride. and the Objective Nutrients Thiamax contains TTFD.     would work for me.

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.
