Finally Feeling Better

I just wanted to say that I am actaully feeling better. I posted a couple of days ago becuase I was thinking about going and seeing the specialist again..but I wanted to try one more thing before I did and it has helped.

I completely took out of my diet: eggs, soy, dairy, grains, rice, potatoes, nuts, beans, corn and gluten of course. I FEEL so much better and it has only been two days. So basicly I am eating similar to the paleo diet ( veggies, fruit, meat and salad) and I feel great. I have not had the big D in three days. I will eat anything as long as I don't have the big D! My stomach is not killing me nor is it nosiy anymore. I have energy. I am hoping this stays this way. I plan on eating like this as long as I am feeling good.

I was looking back at my food journal and it seems like I had symptoms with just about all those food items I mentioned above. I actually had a reaction, itching and breathing problems to corn so that is definitely out of my diet. I know that I am eliminating almost everything from my diet, but if I feel better does that matter? I also wanted to thank those who gave me advise on changing the things that I eat, especially those high allergen foods. It has helped tremendously. I will keep you posted.

I have a list that's as long as that, as do many folks on this board and when people ask me, "well, what do you eat?" I don't think they have any realization how many foods are actually out there. I believe that we're programmed early on to be eating these common allergens for most of our lives and then we react to them? Hello? :D

Welcome to the paleo world! People think it's such a restrictive diet but really, you look at what most people eat, it's probably a short list of things... maybe 20 items in it. They're all just variations on grains. Anyway, with vegetables, spices, fruit and meat, the variety is infinite!

Hint: Look at SE Asian foods for loads of ideas on what you can eat (minus the rice). I'm becoming a Thai food cook. :)

Aha, lectins! I thought so. Have you taken out tomatoes and peppers, too? I am very glad you are feeling better.

Almost paleo (with alittle rice) is helping me, too. Congratulations! I hope you continue to feel better.

I'm very happy for you that you are feeling better! I'm to the same place. I can't eat much but meats, non-starchy vegetables, fruits. I do feel better and haven't had intestinal problems at all. I did try some nuts the other day and my joints hurt so badly now, I'm giving those up forever I think!

      Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

      I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

      Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
