Pain In My Back And Abdomen

foxglove Rookie

hi-

i just diagnosed a month ago, and have been doing my best to be gluten-free since then. i was wondering, though, because i have had bad pain in my lower back - it feels like my kidneys are being squeezed really hard. it's very on and off. also i get sharp pains in my abdomen. has anyone else had that? is it a process of healing, maybe? i went to the emergency and they did an ultrasound, x-rays, pelvic exam, urine samples, and all the results were negative. i wasn't sure if these were all symptoms of celiac or not.

any help would be great!!

I had those symptoms before figuring out I am gluten intolerant. But it took a while before they went away.

You might need to eliminate all dairy as well, before you'll feel better, and probably soy as well.

Also, it is possible that right now you can't digest many things yet. Eat foods that are easy to digest. Meaning, nothing raw or fried. Chicken breasts are good, as are cooked vegetables (well cooked) and cooked fruits.

For six months after starting the gluten-free diet I had to cook everything. It took nearly a year before I could handle salad again. I still feel better on cooked food, but I might have irreversible damage due to being undiagnosed for fifty years.

Thanks, Ursa, that's good to know! I've been worried because it feels something is wrong with my kidneys, but, as I said, all my results were negative. How long did it take for you to have that squeezing feeling go away? The abdomen pain has subsided a lot since being gluten-free for a month, but that back pain (although it's not the actual muscle) continues. That's good to know about certain foods - is that the same with drinks as well? I drank some rum the other night (first time I have had alcohol since I was diagnosed) and the pain was excrutiating! I don't know if it was from that, or just the fact that it was one of the first nights in a month I went out, and was on my feet a lot.

I too had a terrible back ache, even after I went gluten free. I at on point thought I had passed a kidney stone the pain was so severe! I then read that dairy could be causing the problem. I eliminated all dairy products and within a few days I felt much better.

I found dairy causes me sharp stomach and back and shoulder pain.

Gluten causes brain fog, dehydration, fatigue and low blood pressure and chest pains.

Peanuts, heart flutters, skin flushes, and fatigue.

I hopes this gives you some insight and you start to feel better soone!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

I had no idea there is a "Louisville" in Colorado!😉 I thought it was a typo because I always think of the Kentucky city--but good luck!
