No problem, tom. If you really want the answer on this, there are several things you can do.

1. Even if the artichokes are from Spain, they might distributed by an American company or the Spanish company might have a web site.

2. Contact the Vinegar Institute and ask them about "vinegar." If there is a U.S. regulation about this, foreign companies still have to follow the U.S. regulation when they distribute in the U.S.

3. Search the FDA rules for anything pertaining to "vinegar" and how it is made. I think it is almost certainly distilled but cannot guarantee that.

There is a magazine for us???? Where do I get it? I get all these danged magazines with all these recipes I cannot eat and it just makes me sad.. can someone point me in the direction of this?

Does this mean that regular Best Foods Mayo is Ok to use? It said vinegar so I discarded it but if we can have vinegar, yeah for mayo.

Please advise!

Best Foods mayo is definitely gluten-free.

Don't toss stuff just because it has an ingredient that you've been told we have to watch out for. Sometimes, as is the case with vinegar or annatto, we don't actually have to worry about it. Other times, such as with natural flavors and modified food starch, we DO have to watch out, but the vast majority of time the ingredient is gluten-free.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
