The Yogurt Mysteries...

Ok. I've had two weeks of this and now I need some help. I was in the bathroom earlier trying to get positive thoughts to make my poop normal: "You will be solid and brown and you will not float!" :P Needless to say, it did not work (if only it was so easy!)

I was actually having a pretty good couple of weeks, but I was still battling weight loss and INSANE hunger. So, when I tried to add different things to my meals so I could get some more protein, I added yogurt, which I haven't eaten in YEEEEARS. I've been eating it for two weeks and I am finally full for the whole afternoon which is awesome, but my tummy is not acting very normal. I've been having some D (not as bad as when glutened, but still) and when it's not D it's the wrong color, floats a lot, and is very small. Other than adding the yogurt, I have not changed a thing.

My first inclination is to say that it's the dairy - but I eat cheese like it's going out of style - and drink milk in my coffee and never have a problem. And I'm eating Yoplait which I've checked about 349 times and it is supposed to be gluten free.

So what's the deal?

This may not help you, but anyways.... I thought I was having a problem with yogurt. Like you, I also eat cheese like crazy, cream in my coffee/tea, and so on. I figured out that tapioca was my problem. Floating, gassy stools, borderline diarrhea, sometimes. Just thought I'd add my two cents. LOL

So what's the deal?

My first question would be do you know for sure and for certain that the yogurt is gluten-free? Many are not. If the answer to that is yes then you may want to hold off on dairy for a month or two and try again. If you are new to the diet your villi may need some time to heal before you can tolerate dairy.

Yoplait is gluten free it is a Kraft product, so it would say in the ingredients if not. I can't remember for sure if it has splenda in it or if it is just in the Yoplait yogert smoothies. Just a thought that came to mind.

It could possibly be the fat content in the yogurt. Things with high fat content affect me, so I have to be careful not to eat a lot at one sitting. It's gotten better over the months, but it can still be a problem.

I've read that fat is something damaged small intestines have trouble absorbing, so it tends to pass through undigested, which makes stools float among other things. Maybe low fat or non fat yogurt would be a better choice?

I don't eat flavored yogurts anymore. I buy plain yogurt in a big tub and mix in frozen and fresh fruits and a little sugar if needed for about the same taste. That way I know exactly what's in it, and it's a whole lot cheaper.

I have a thought for you. Have you checked the sugar content of your yogurt? My body behaves far better when I remove all the excess sugar, just a little conatiner of Yoplait could have more than 20 grams of sugar. I would recommend getting the large tubs of organic plain yogurt, I like Seven Stars Farm brand the best, becuase they have real cultures and healthy cows, but Stonyfield is more widely available. You can add frozen blueberries for a fiber filled yummy treat. My fave frozen blueberries are Wyman's, they're wild so they're very little and very sweet. I'd say dairy's not your problem if you'd already been eating all that other stuff without a problem.

Dear sansglutengrl,

You may be able to tolerate small amounts of lactose, but not much dairy. I get sick if I eat yogurt or pudding, but tolerate milk chocolate and cheese. Kraft Cheese has 0 grams of lactose. That might be why. It is really odd how are bodies behave.

My diet is very low fat and low sugar and I never thought to look at the nutrition label on the yogurt - duh! there's lots o sugar and more fat than I usually eat so I bet that's part of it. I'm going to try this plain yogurt with blueberries and see if that helps. High fiber and yummy?? That sounds too good to be true!

Kraft cheese has 0 grams of lactose?! aaahha! It makes so much sense now! I absolutely live on that stuff. I wonder if this is why I can't eat ice cream either.... that is something that I seriously hope is temporary, I used to eat it every night!!

Yep, it says so on the label! You know those cracker cuts they have? They have it on the package! They have no lactose! Ice cream is a no-no for me, too. Maybe once our intestines heal, we could go back to it.

By the way- you kinda want your poo to float, it means you're getting enough fat to have some be waste product. It depends on what your body can tolerate, but there are a lot of fat-soluble vitamins you won't be able to digest unless you get enough GOOD fat. Try looking through the Weston Price foundation website, it has a great deal of info about vitamins and fatty foods. Baked goods fats are bad; avocado, raw dairy, and raw olive oil type fats are very good and very necessary.

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
