I have a dull constant aching pain in my back.....the pain gets sharper if I move. It is on the right side a good 6" up from my waist line. This pain has progresivly gotten worse over the past few months. It is also tender in my abdomen in the same place but doesn't hurt near as bad as my back does. It didn't start untill after I went on the gluten-free diet. Now it is getting bad enough that I find myself not doing much of anything wich isn't like me. The pain is qetting quite severe and doesn't go away at all now. Has anyone experiencd somthing like this or no what the problem could be. I have mentioned this to my idiot doctor and she always pushes it aside as nothing. Unfortionantly my insurance will not cover a different doctor nor do I have to money to see one on my own.

hannasue . . . .

I am sorry that you're feeling so AWFUL. I have some questions:

1) You said the pain gets worse if you move. When you go up and down stairs, does it hurt in your pubic bones as well? (I know that's weird, but it's a key factor in differential diagnosis)

2) You said it's 6" above your waist. Are you talking about the top of your hip bones, or the curve at your waist?

3) Is the pain located anywhere under your ribs?

4) Do you have pain in your back under your ribs?

5) Have you had difficulty with constipation since being gluten-free?

I know that these questions are intrusive -- if you would feel better PM'ing me, that's fine!

I'm getting ready to log off. My daughter is in town, and I'm going to go hang out with her. I'll check back as soon as I get home.

1)I have no pain anywhere below my belly button area.....including pelvic region

2)It starts about 6" above my hip bones...waist area and is over time has spread from about a 2" circle to about 5". It started out closer to my back bone (maybe an inch out from it) but doesn't seem to be related to it at all and has radiated out since.

3)It don't think its under my ribs...not on the side ne ways unless I move

4)It is in my back under the ribs

5)I have had probs with constipation from time to time but it has been lots better since going gluten-free and havnt been so for at least a month now.

Seems to low for my lungs and I havn't had any breathing problems lately. My dad had gall baldder problems. I do have a history of taking allot of pain pills for long periods of time. Donno what info would help....let me know if you have more questions. The only things I can seem to link them to are my liver or gallbladder but from what I have looked up online don't really seem to fit the profile for those things. May not be looking in the right place though.

Thanks so much for trying to help.....I hope you have some answears for me.

My pain is on my left side and goes from the front to the back. This morning it was strictly in the front and radiated down the inside of my leg (not like sciatica) and started after I had a couple of (normal) bowel movements with no symptoms of diarrhea. I had been slightly constipated, but felt fine until afterwards. The pain this AM wasn't the normal ache that started after I went off gluten. Instead, it felt just like an open sore that has had rubbing alcohol splashed into it. It's like I have a sore inside of my body.

The gallbladder comes to mind.

hannasue: I'm not an M.D. -- need to state that up-front! I'm a PT, had to take lots of differential diagnosis during school and chose to take more after school. Guess I just thought that it is something that is REALLY important!

It does sound as though it could be gallbladder related. Typically that kind of pain feels more "stabbing" in nature, and can almost take your breath away. Another thing that comes to mind is possible kidney stones. That can radiate up to your lower ribs, and can certainly hurt in the area in which you are describing. Having had them previously, I can say from experience that the pain can sort of "wax and wane", until you finally begin to actually pass the stone. It seems as though that while that little sucker is in there tumbling around, deciding whether its going to come on out, it can still cause some discomfort. During its descent through the ureters, it becomes much more uncomfortable. When it comes out? Think: peeing razor blades. Sorry, but that's what it felt like to me. I was working at the hospital when it happened, after having my doctor tell me that I had "quadratus lumborum spasm" the day before, and having a pretty bad night and morning. Advil did NOTHING to help!!

Teacher 1958: Having worked with women's health patients, I found that it wasn't unusual for patients to have that type of sensation in their left leg the way you described. It seems that the cecum of the colon is right where the nerves of the lumbosacral plexus nerve bundle starts splitting. When it is full, it can press on those nerves and cause some radicular symptoms like you described. Should you have them again, though, I would check with my primary care physician -- you don't want to let anything go unchecked -- just in case.

A friend of mine is in the bar trade most of his life and has never heard of lines being mixed for different type of beers and ciders. Better to stick with cans.

Thanks very much for confirming my suspicion @Scott Adams! That helps a lot because I'm really trying to track down and get rid of these sources of cross-contact and so I'm going to just rule out the draft ciders and hope that helps. Also @Rogol72 its nice to hear you haven't had a problem on that side of the pond - draft cider lines being used for cider only certainly sounds like the right way to do it, but I think that must not always be practiced over here!

I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.
    • Zuma888
Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.
