Has Anyone Eaten At Pluto's?

In Santana Row in San Jose they have a Pluto's and they look pretty celiac and vegan friendly. It looks like I can make a salad (even though I dont know WHAT the heck I'd put on it for dressing lol) and I heard from a friend that you can get a baked potato there and dress it how you please, but on the menu online it doesn't say that (or at least I don't think it does). So does anyone have any suggestions, or want to share any experiences?

I used to eat at the Plutos in Davis all the time, but have stopped since going gluten free. The way they make their salads there seems ot be a very high risk of Cross contamination. And when I asked about other items, they didn't seem very helpful.

Sad, because I really liked their food.

Are you going to school in Santa Rosa?

I'm actually going to school in Davis :)

I'm SO SO excited!

Any advice for a gluten free vegan that's a soon-to-be resident of Davis?

Well, congratulations on coming to Davis. I've really enjoyed it here. I actually graduate Saturday, but will be around for a while after that, I live in the area and will be doing some work at the school.

I'm not a vegan, so I'm not an expert on that. There is a gluten-free bakery in Davis, but I'm not sure how much of their stuff would be gluten-free. I'm sure some of it would be, and they seem willing to adapt. A friend of mine has them make gluten-free, dairy-free, nut free cookies, so those are probably Vegan. The farmers market downtown on weds and thurs will have fresh fruit and vegetable.

there is a good indian restaurant right near campus. Upstairs on 3rd street. My friend who is a strict vegetarian (but not Vegan) eats there alot, and I've eaten with her there, and it seems like much of their stuff would be safe.

Thai 2K was awesome with gluten-free, I've eaten there a few times. and it seems like some of their stuff should be Vegan.

No idea about the dorms (I'm a graduate student) or the places on campus (nothing but coffee on campus since going gluten-free).

Good luck. Let me know what you find when you get here. I'll admit I'm not very adventerous, and I hate getting sick, so there's only a few places I go.

Do you have a bike? Davis is super bike friendly, and it's the best way to get around here.

Thanks for all of the info :)

And congratulations on gradutating!

I'm going bike shopping soon...my grandma is getting me a "beach cruiser" bike (or something like that haha) as a graduation gift. That's one of my favorite things about Davis. I don't like driving much, so I think it's fantastic that everything seems like it's walking distance, or biking distance at least.

I think we're heading up to visit Davis soon, and I think I might try out the Thai restaurant. I'll let you know how it goes! What do you usually order there?

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
